BHOYS BEATEN IN EURO OPENER

Tony Mowbray was handed a harsh dose of reality in his first competitive game as Celtic boss as his side lost 1-0 to Dinamo Moscow in the first leg of their Champions League third qualifying round clash at Parkhead.

Aleksandr Kokorin's seventh-minute strike gave the Russian club a clear advantage ahead of next week's return game in Moscow. The Dinamo frontman was sharpest to Alexander Kerzhakov's cross from the left to slip the ball past Hoops' keeper Artur Boruc and, while the home side battled for the rest of the game, it was to no avail.

Mowbray said: "I'm disappointed about the result obviously but I'm still optimistic"

Optimistic he might be, but Celtic are perenniel failures in Europe

I can't believe Celtic won that. I thought they were doomed after losing at home with a terrible away record in recent years.

Samaras scored a cracker at the death to send them into the group stages after Aussie McDonald levelled the tie just before half time.

BHOYS AND ARSENAL COULD COLLIDE

Arsenal and Celtic could be set to meet for a place in the lucrative Champions League group phase.

The Hoops, who overcame a 1-0 first-leg deficit to claim a 2-1 aggregate win over Dinamo Moscow, are one of five unseeded teams the Gunners could face on their 'non-champions path' to the group stage of the competition.

Aside from a potential 'Battle of Britain' encounter, there are some other dangerous opponents Arsene Wenger's men could come up against.

Atletico Madrid are a superb attacking unit with Argentina's Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan providing a regular supply of goals for the Rojiblancos, although they are less secure at the back.

Like Arsenal, Atletico finished fourth in their domestic league, as did Fiorentina, another potential play-off rival.

Fiorentina - 'the Viola' - are similarly blessed going forward, with former Chelsea forward Adrian Mutu among their ranks along with Italy striker Alberto Gilardino and highly-rated Montenegro international Stevan Jovetic.

Arsenal could also face Anderlecht, who were beaten in a Belgian title play-off by Standard Liege last season. The 29-times Belgian champions beat Turkish side Sivasspor 5-0 in Brussels en route to a 6-3 aggregate victory in the third qualifying round.

The fifth possibility for Wenger and co is a trip to Romania to face FC Timisoara, who finished second in their domestic league last season behind Unirea Urziceni.

They reached the play-off stage by knocking out UEFA Cup holders Shakhtar Donetsk on away goals.

Here's the story

BATTLE OF BRITAIN FOR CL PLACE

Arsenal have been drawn to face Celtic in an all-British tie later this month to reach the Champions League group stage.

Celtic, following their victory over Dinamo Moscow earlier this week, face the daunting task of Arsene Wenger's men.

The first leg will take place on August 18 or 19, days after both sides begin their league campaigns.

It is the first time the two clubs will meet in European competition and the prize will be a path to the lucrative stage of the competition.

Eduardo free of UEFA ban
