2009 Magarey Medal (plus coverage details)

All discussions to do with the SANFL

Hi everyone,

Just a point of clarification before the story gets out of hand.

In short there was no "smuggling or "pirating" of count details last night to this web site.

When Dutchy was negotaiting with the SANFL for two people from safooty.net to do a live blog from AAMI (which was declined), we did advise of a Plan B to replay info via mobile to someone at home to input, especially as a backup if the SANFL site feed did not work.

Dutchy received from the SANFL a written e-mail which in essence said that was fine as long as someone was prepared the pay the mobile bill involved.

I agreed with Dutchy to be a souce of info live from the count when required.

As an officially accredited member of the SANFL Media I signed an agreement pre-season that at all times I would not disobey instructions from an league official, otherwise my accreditation could be withdrawn.

At no stage was I or Dutchy advised NOT to proceed with what we did. Indeed in the media breifing issued on Monday there was no mention made of exclusive broadcasting rights or the banning of relaying info to other souces. Nor was I approached by any SANFL official during the night to stop.

When the SANFL site went down we merely did what we told the SANFL we were going to do back on Friday.

I did receive a comment 3rd hand from a fellow media worker half way through the count that I thought at the time meant the league was not happy it was occurring but in all likelyhood it was chinese whispers as the SANFL knew who was doing it and could have come to me direct at any time. They did not. It was more likely they were not happy with their site crashing, it just got lost in translation during the emotion of the tight count.

So please no fiction that we sumggled information out against direct SANFL orders or anything, I would like to keep my accreditation.

Cheers

I'm suprised noone's mentioned the Advertiser's effort. Too lazy to even wait around and take a photo of the winners with their medals. Obviously took a dozen photos of the top fancies walking in and just waited for word on who won printing those entrance photos. Pathetic IMHO!

Page 82s even worse, just has photos of them playing and poor action shots at that.
Still could be worse, at least they have a pic of Rhys in a Rooster guensey.

You must have got an early edition, my page 82 has a photo of the two medallists with their medals. I suspect it was a timing issue for early editions (remember ADV had to know the result prior to post the round by round count details) rather than an effort issue.

Mine is the 'Subscriber Edition', Id assume they wouldn't provide a lesser service to subscribers?
The same edition managed quite easily to have shots taken after AFL night games that finished later as well as Brownlow winners and previous Magarey Medal winners.
Extremely nasty letter to the Editor coming up to this pack of clueless morons which I doubt will get printed!

Looks like the poor bastards didn't even have enough red carpet to reach the door. Bloody GFC.

We are all getting collectively ripped off with the direction they (the sanfl) are heading......and not only on the Magarey Medal count.

It is very concerning.

Ruckmen generally get ripped off SJT - but I am staggered that Paul Thomas could only poll 3 votes

Congrats to both winners as they are most worthy and great players.

Yes, that was very suprising with Thomo, I know he missed a bit of footy with the broken hand but to only get 3 votes, WOW

The others who didn't poll as well as I thought they would (or not even at all) were blokes like Trevor Cranston, Jason Mackenzie, Tristian Gum, Jade Sheedy, Bronik Davies, Brad Murray, the Gowans twins and Adam Fisher

Although our Brett Zorzi is more of a ‘Mr. Reliable’ as opposed to a ‘Flashy’ player, I am
disappointed he only polled 5 votes. I’ve always thought that the best players from teams
lower on the ladder had a better chance of catching the umpires eyes. You know, less
competition to take away votes.
So which club is more likely to get a Magarey Medalist in the modern game, based on ladder
position ?
Statistically speaking, are they more likely to come from the top, middle or bottom 3 on the
ladder ?
Or has this no bearing on who wins at all ?
:-k
Cue….’Spelly’ ?

Boy, things must be tight at the SANFL. Have they recalled the mobile phones of all their staff members too?

thats a joke no coverage of the SANFL's best and fairest award. They have no idea on how to run a competition they are a joke to themselves. You would think they would televise the medal count for the members and supporters of this great comp. Ohh well while the current board is in charge this comp will go down hill.

RHYS Archard and James Ezard have been lauded for their courage to bounce back from failed AFL careers and win the SANFL’s highest honour, the Magarey Medal last night.

The North Adelaide defender and West Adelaide midfielder each polled 18 votes to share the award - one vote clear of former winner James Allan at the AAMI Stadium ceremony.

Archard, who walked away from the Adelaide Crows in 2007 because he was a ``naive kid’’ ``disillusioned’’ with football, had an outstanding year with the Roosters, including his 47 possession, Round 23 game that earned him a crucial three votes.

Ezard meanwhile, who was bitterly disappointed at being delisted by Port Adelaide Power two years ago, has become one of the state’s premier midfielders and touted a future captain at West Adelaide.

Bloods coach Andy Collins said it was “obviously” the best thing that had happened in his three years at Richmond Oval.

“We spoke a lot at the end of the season, and I was quite disappointed with his 2008 season,” Collins said.

“I’d seen him play as an 18-year-old in Victoria before he got drafted (to Port Adelaide Power), so I knew what he was capable of and what he was delivering were two different things.

“And to his credit, he drove himself to be a very self disciplined, highly professional, athletic footballer.”

Collins said a senior leadership role beckoned.

“And Ferg (Ryan Ferguson) understands he’s got great support in Benny Fisher, Jimmy Ezard, David Piasante and Shane Birss.

“He’s (Ezard) only 22 years of age and he’s going to be a wonderful leader of our footy club in the future.”

North Adelaide coach Daniel Healy was singing the praises of his dashing defender, Archard, who has turned himself from a talented (but unfit) footballer, to one of the competition’s elite players.

“I got to the club and he was as unfit as anyone last year, and these things don’t just happen,” Healy said.

“He worked his butt of all pre-season and you love to see blokes getting rewarded for that effort.

“Obviously he had natural talent but he was not in a condition to play elite football and he knew it.

“So he’s taken everything we’ve thrown at him; the beauty of Rhys is he was willing to accept that.”

In a press conference last night, Archard said his decision to return to Adelaide from his home town of Echuca two years ago and play with the Roosters had been vindicated.

“Hopefully, I’m pretty sure I’ve repaid them with some of the footy I’ve played the last couple of years,” Archard said.

Sitting beside him, Ezard said wining the medal with Archard was a special moment.

“It will be something we’ll always have now,” Ezard said.

“We’ll be spoken about in the same sentence for a while, which is good.”

Ezard, drafted to the Power from Victoria at 18, said he found the year after being delisted “really tough”.

“Once you’ve been rejected you find it tough, but this year I’ve put it behind me and focused on myself and playing the best footy I can - and having fun doing it, and that’s been the major difference this year.”

You have hit the nerve! This is why this no longer sits in the SANFL's "highest accolade" department, no TV or Radio station is interested enough to do anything with it.
Why doesn't the SANFL make a stipulation to the stations that broadcast their games, this is an integral part of our state football coverage and to get the rights to broadcast them, you WILL COVER the Magarey Medal count, no ifs or buts, you WILL do it.
Make these guys earn their crust, don't go 'soft' on them if they don't either. P^ss them off!

The reason we can't do that with the t.v stations is because we need them more than they need us unfortunatly, the ABC would happily show a re-run of the first season of the bill if we tried to play to hard a ball with them.

my 2 cents.
