Football Budget Prices over the years

Postby spell_check » Sat Oct 14, 2006 7:28 pm

I've got the 1990, 93, 94, 96, 2000, 01, 04, 05 and 06 GF budgets, as well as Budgets from 1990 onwards, a a couple before that.

I was wondering if we could come up with a chart showing the prices of the Budgets over the years.

The prices I know of are:

Minor Round/Finals:
1971-73: 10c
1973 SA vs Vic: 20c
1982 2nd Semi: 60c
1990-91: $1.50
1992: ? (I've got one but without the cover)
1993-99: $2.00
2000-04: $2.50
2005-06: $3.00

Grand Final:
1990: $2.00
1993: ? (Again, no cover)
1994-96: $3.00
2000-06: $5.00

At least $5 is reasonable, unlike the AFL Record - $13

I think the Budget is pretty good value, especially looking at those prices.
Most people I speak to would like more content but I think its a juggling act versus the quality of the production and it is a top notch production they put out week in week out.
Crowds are probably comparable to the NBL and they don't have anything like the Budget weekly and that's a national comp with bigger exposure.

Normal season budgets:
1960-1965 6d
1966-1973 10 cents
1974 15 cents
1975-1976 20 cents
1977-1979 30 cents
1980-1981 40 cents
1982-1983 50 cents
1984 60 cents
1985 60 cents, later 90 cents
1986-1988 $1
1989-1991 $1.50
1992-1999 $2
2000-2004 $2.50
2005-2006 $3

In some seasons, extra prices were charged for EF, QF, 1S, 2S & PF budgets.

In 1982, they went from the smaller budgets to the larger magazine style.

That SA vs Vic match in 1973 I have, is the size the Budgets are now instead of the small size around then. Thought that's a bit interesting.

Yes, I preferred that idea. The budget used to be a hand held or pocket size which was easier to store. The major events such as Grand Finals and State matches were the larger size. Now all budgets are the same size and take up a lot of room :)

Has anyone seen the WAFL Grand Final Budget? It is outstanding. It's more than just a budget, it's a year book. It has every imaginable fact or figure for the season, details of previous Grand Finals, detailed summaries of each round of footy for the season, write ups on all clubs, and also games played and goals kicked for each player for the season. An absolute winner for the historically minded and all for $5. SANFL Football Budget is very good, the WAFL one is even better.

I still think they could do a bit more with the Budget, though it has improved in the last couple of years. I wouldnt want it to go above $3.

I havent seen a GF budget for a while, but I used to like back in the early 90s when they had a small but informative Round by ROund review and then also Team photos of all clubs.

I'm glad to say the 2006 edition went back to this concept. Very attractive team photos and write ups of the clubs over the season. I'd like to see them add team listings of the number of games played and goals kicked for each player during the season.

IMHO the 2006 GF Budget was the best they've done for quite a few years.

Haven't read a Budget for about four or five years.

Back then it was an absolute mess so it's good to hear that it's picked up since.

To my way of thinking, the yearbook should be separate from the GF edition.

Just because I think it's criminal that the SANFL don't release an annual yearbook similar to the old Footy Times.

Actually, just thinking about it makes my blood boil.

Things such as a quality match programme, informative and interesting yearbooks and a decent website are the absolute basics the clowns at West Lakes should already have in place.

What holds them back? Are they just plain stupid? Or cheap?

Maybe they just don't give a flying f***?

The latter.

What the current Budget lacks is a columnist, like the Phantom or Schwarz Shorts.
