2009 Magarey Medal (plus coverage details)

All discussions to do with the SANFL

What about Cranston as a smoky? Not sure how he polled last year but am sure Umps would be a lot more aware of him this year.

I expect Thommo to start well & come home with a wet sail but may have missed too many to get over the line.

LifeFM and SAFooty.net both have tried unsuccessfully to cover the night live.

After discussions with the SANFL they have agreed to cover the count via their website http://www.sanfl.com.au in real time.

This will supplement the live crosses from Channel 9 @ 6.10pm, 7.30pm, 8.30pm, 9.30pm and 10.30pm (featuring an interview with the winner). I will attempt to Youtube this ASAP for our interstate/overseas members or those that missed it.

Updates will also be available in the SANFL Twitter site Image

We will also have a contact at the count should the above methods fail us!

So hopefully we will have all the latest news on here and the SANFL site during Tuesday night.

Nice work everyone.

It's pretty poor when the Premier footy comp in this state can't have a broadcast in some form for the premier award of the season. TV or Radio!

Maybe the SANFL could negotiate with the ABC to cover one game a week AND the Magarey Medal?

Big Phil or PhilH ... For those of us who have no idea about the cost of putting the games to air on radio each week, what sort of ball park figure would we be talking and how much different would it be for the medal count that takes roughly 1 1/2 hours? Would have thought it would be cheaper than 5 live crosses on the idiot box.
Trust the process.

Don't know what the figure is, even ball park, but like everything else with the economic situation, cut backs on expenses have to be and have been made and sadly, the covergae of the Magarey is one of them.

Columbo,

I can only report what I said before.

In recent years re TV the SANFL approached ABCTV & Ch 9 for them to give coverage and the media outlets declined a live count for commercial reasons.

In both 2008 & 2009 it was LifeFM that proactively approached the SANFL to ensure that a live count still went out to the "die-hards".

In 2008, the SANFL accepted LifeFM's offer. There was a payment made that helped cover costs which I can't advise but you could sponsor an SANFL player at most clubs for it without much change.

Alas, at some point in 2009 someone at the SANFL made a decision to cut live radio coverage out of the Magarey Medal budget and thus deny the passionate supporters a live count for the first time in decades.

To stop incorrect assumptions I need to clarify that it was not a case of
- LifeFM not wanting to do the count (They had to proactively approach the SANFL)
- Space being a showstopping issue (It was going to be from the changerooms if required)
- LifeFM asking for unreasonable money (The exact same deal as 2008 to ensure LifeFM did not lose money from doing the broadcast was all that was requested.)

That's the facts of the matter as far as I can say them.

i understand the GFC is impacting across the board, but you would have thought the SANFL would want as much media coverage of this as possible.

very poor decision SANFL

I reckon it could be a Jimmy double. Allan and Ezard to tie on 19 votes.

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Surely Mark McKenzie from the Eagles will poll a few?

Think Michael Coad will poll a few more than some think even though he's ineligible.

As I said, good on you for trying.

The AFL have cursed the GFC also, but that is still broadcast because it is part of the broadcast rights. Yet community broadcasters offer to do it for minimal coin (ie basically a small cost recovery) and the SANFL declines. Presumably they worry it will undercut future price negotiations. Millions to bail out the Power but cant find a few hundred for the SANFL state league fans. Very sad.
