Malthouse has coached for 25 consectutive years for two flags. Hardly a brilliant return.

How many winning finals has he coached?
Is it all about premierships that make you a good coach?

Always has taken a good grab from behind. With a man on his hammer he has fumbled every time .I quoted a vital mark on here 2 years ago in the "Buddy on Massie
" final where we went up with 1 hand and eyes closed finching cos he was in the front of the pack. The slow motion reply was embarrassing. He could have sealed it right then but sherked it plain and simple.Dont mention it here in Adelaide though  The biggest stooge for free kicks in the league for years . That brilliant coach was 20 seconds away from going out in straight sets after finishing 4th

Playing at home in front of 60,000 fans and he almost dropped the whole season

I don't think he will be waking up this morning thinking how great a coach he is. Rather he will be thinking "thank god" !!!! He let his opponent get 5 goals up in a final - how many times will he get away with that?

Be realistic ... he will be. A 1 point game could have gone either way.

& be realistic too Hondo- Crows were red-hot favourites.
Collingwood were under-manned, the Crows were talking Premierships, yet Malthouse get his side up by 5 pts- & you don't conceed.
Your post sounds like Collingwood were $1.01 favourites, playing at Victoria Park & the Crows had cold showers & had to walk to the ground because the Pies denied them a bus- that would be a brave loss.
However in the real 2009, Collingwood coming of some heavy defeats, minus a couple of stars, beat a red-hot favourite Adelaide outfit, who according to some scribes were beginning a dynasty- Collingwood were a minor inconvenience in the scheme of things.
Collingwood's brave win would have also been a brave loss.

PS why are Crows supporters hi-jacking the thread, which is meant to be about Brett Burton?

Talk it up Punky - if Collingwood had dropped out in straight sets after being premiership favourite (almost) after round 21 you'd be very disappointed. They've been flying since about round 8. Fraser was missing last time they beat the Crows and Pendles absence was offset by Bock/VB and then Knights' injury.

Besides, now you're the one making it sound like the Crows finished 2nd in the minor round and Collingwood just scraped in

Despite you pumping the Crows up, for most sensible experts it was an even set-up pre-match and it turned out that way. My point is not to draw too many guru/chump conclusions on the senior coach following a 1 point game.

Been a good player but his time has come, sure he can still take a good mark but just doesnt get enough ball these days, even when the Crows were flying tonight he fumbled and was rarely seen. Did you see him blowing up in the last quarter when fitness was critical?

Id keep the other over 30's for another year but room has to be made for the future

My opinion of course but a hard call needs to be made

Agree with this. Burton is struggling.
Let burton go because your about to need the space in the cap to keep Tippett.

not sure why this is being discussed in the Brett Burton thread, but here goes....

Adelaide were favourites to win last night- they had a superior game plan, a superior coach & a list of champions that would be the envy of other clubs. They were unbeatable- according to this state.
But as you know, games are not won on paper & an under-manned Pies outfit proved this.

It is the way Adelaide supporters conduct themselves that leaves them open to ridicule- last night everytime the Crows goaled (when in front early) they gloated. When the lead changed hands late in the game, they were in my face carrying on (finger pointing & "f**k you"), however, when we won, I needed not to say anything to them- they carried on like arses & got ahead of themselves (much like the club).

I remain humble in victory, but will not allow ridiculous claims to go un-challenged.

39 Finals for 20 wins, with 3 different clubs. Not a bad record. Compared to 9 finals for 3 wins

I'd suggest that a 50% winning ratio in finals is far from "Not a Bad Effort". If you showed up to an interview for a senior coaching job at any club and told then you could only win half of the finals you got your team into do you seriously think you would get a job?
As for what this thread is REALLY about..............Burton was no where near as fit at this time this season as he normally is. How often in the past has Burton been accused of not being able to run out a match? Being soft.................YES. Being stupid..............YES. Unfit..............hell NO. Don't forget this bloke has just come off a serious knee injury. Let's see how he goes with a full pre season under his belt.

Another penut post from a clown who barracks for a team who appointed Andrew Jarman as their "savior" a few years back.
So when the Crows were 5 goals up at quarter time how many match ups did Craig have wrong? He sure as hell couldn't have predicted the shite skill errors and ball movement that infected the team in the third quarter. He sent players back into defence to "steady the ship" so to speak and it worked. The last five minutes of the third quarter the Crows got some momenteum back and went back to normal in the final quarter.................winning the quarter just not by enough. Exactly WHAT did Neil Craig do wrong in THIS game? Put this loss down to two things 1. Poor skill errors at cruical times. 2. A collingwood side who can play football and showed plenty of balls and skill when it mattered most.

The biggest problem of the AFL is the need to go defensive at any occasion. It's come to be an in-built thing when not only trying to stop the run of goals but of more concern is to do it when you are up by a significant margin. How often do you see a team sit on a lead? How often do you see a team not wanting to give up a goal in the last two minutes of the quarter, and not try to get one themselves? It's instinctive of AFL teams to do this nowadays.

Craig hasn't been perfect, but neither has someone like Malthouse who arguably screwed up the week before.
Both coaches suffered from players who failed to perform with the required intensity and/or skills for parts of, or the whole game.
This was particularly evident for Adelaide on saturday night where very experienced players let the team (and coach) down in terms of discipline and skills errors.

I still have plenty of faith in Craig and his assistants to address the deficiencies in personnel and game plans to improve the team further.
I respect a coach like Malthouse, but he too is yet to deliver a flag (after 10 years now at Collingwood).

Burton was indeed ordinary on sat night.
If not for the Knights injury, he should have been off the field much earlier.
Sadly I think his time is probably up. Time to put more game time into the likes of Walker, Sloan & Dangerfield etc. They are the future.
He took mark of the year a few weeks ago. Thats probably a good way to go out. He'll go down as one of the great speccy takers of all time.

While I'm at it, I might as well comment on a few other things.

Crows were beat up as favourites by the media. But plenty of us could see they were in for a big fight in the semi. Their past three wins were against undermanned & poor sides, where as Collingwood were (& still are) a genuine premiership contender.
IMO I dont see the 8 day v 6 day break as a huge advantage. Collingwood refused to play players under an injury cloud & went in with all fully fit blokes. When you are young fit & motivated you are ready to play 4 or 5 days after your last game (well i used to be :ymdaydream: ). Throw in the travelling requirement & the huge support at the ground for the Pies, I thought they went in equal favourites.

Craig is a good coach. Malthouse however IMHO is the best in the business. To inspire his team to respond to their poor start was brilliant. (of course you need the players to pull it off aswell) Losing Knights was a pivotal point. He was on fire up until the injury, & it left the crows unbalanced & they lost his brilliance at the contest in their forward line.

Sure Malthouse may have had the better of the coaching box dual on the night, but Craig still did well & he is still the best man for the Adelaide job.

All in all, Crows season finished up about where it should have. I just couldnt see them beating Collingwood or St Kilda on the G this season in September. But they went bloody close to pinching it, when they looked gone at 3/4 time.

Next year the expectations will be higher.
Yeah, Naah,..... Bollocks!
