No they weren't, Norwood were approached by the VFL many years before Port took up the offer they did. Mid 80s from memory. It was pretty common knowledge.

I'm not referring to any 80s interest, of which there was more than just Norwood. The finger was again pointed squarely at Port Adelaide for the 1990 bid. And again it was "common knowledge" that Norwood procrastinated allowing Port to snap up the offer. Their current plight is Karma for their post bid hypocrisy.

Oh, so Norwood had the chance to turn their back on the SANFL, elected not to, yet you're suggesting they are the bad guys?

Early 80's IIRC, they met with Ian Collins (as did Port).

This story is the one that Rucci would constantly discuss without ever coming out and saying precisely, rather he'd just throw innuendo without putting his neck on the line ... No doubt Norwood would have held discussions and/or meetings in secret (as several clubs would have), but to suggest that Norwood had the opportunity to join the AFL and fully intended to, but were too slow is nothing more than scuttlebutt from a club supporter whose clubs can do no wrong in his eyes (even though it's there for hundreds of thousands of other people to see).

"beenreal" is not being real - or at least is avoiding reality. ;)
And the "common knowledge" had a rather common source.

The AFL have made no secret of the fact that when they approached Port Adelaide for the SA AFL licence their first choice was a composite SA side (which Port were aware of), 2nd option was the most successful SA side (Port Adelaide), 3rd option was the next best (Norwood) and a 4th option of a merged Port and Norwood (rejected by both Port and Norwood). Ultimately the AFL achieved its goals.

Everytime this comes up people forget the fact that in both 1990 and in 1995 (when they where awarded the licence) the Port Adelaide Football Club had no intention to have both team they where going to move soley into the AFL. In 1990 the bid was stop (Norwood and Glenelg cried) and in the latter bid the SANFL told a condition of getting there licence was to keep a team in the SANFL so even though I realised I wont have a team to support and I would rather they stayed, if the Port Magpies where to leave the compertion it would just been what was going to of happened anyway
The problem with Barcelona is that I like fish and chips but they had to turn it into calamari and patatas

I was searching on Google for the term "feeder club" and strangely enough, stumbled upon this:

There is one addition to this story however. It is stronly rumoured that Norwood were also approached by the AFL and were all set to launch their own bid but were beaten to the punch by Port. Norwood went very quiet on the situation except to call Port Adelaide "Traitors to the SANFL". Michaelangelo Rucci knows the full story but for some reason (I think Legalities) he has never fully revealed it, but maintains that some day he will.

I thought the VFL wanted Port & Norwood in their competition as early as 1982?

Don Roach approached the VFL in '81 about the prospect of a South Australian club joining their comp.

They weren't interested.

Then there was the infamous 1985 meeting at the South Park Motor Inn between officials from the VFL, Port and Norwood.

Gary Linnell writes about the 1990 drama in his excellent book AFL Ltd. Basically says Port and Norwood were in bed with the AFL but the latter jumped out when they heard the story was going to break (the leak caught everyone on the hop).

On and off the ground, The Legs always tease...

Rucci... a club supporter whose clubs can do no wrong in his eyes

Pure, unadulterated scuttlebut. ;)

Rucci, for all his faults, probably criticizes the club more than anyone.

Just ask Jack and Chocko who have both waged war against 'Ferret Face' at various times...

Shame Norwood and Port didn't go in. Could've been two lots of sub 20K crowds at Footy Park and the rest of the comp would be doing fine with their crowd numbers..
It's all the SANFL's fault.

That's because Rucci is a Magpies supporter, not a Power supporter. His words I hasten to add.
'People are not stupid. They know when they are being conned. And two reserves teams operating in a League competition will reduce it to a farce, a competition without a soul.'

What's the word on Port actually folding? Got an email today from a Port supporter who has been involved with the historical side of things saying that he probably wont have a club to follow by the end of next year. "i've never hated the Power more" was the comment.

Hmmm, Port supporters hating each other, the SANFL must be popping the champagne corks.

You should read the Port board on BF some time. People on there telling the Magpies to eff off and die.

So now it's national news:
