Amazing how the coach of the year can finish four games behind the top two teams after the minor round and get thrashed on Grand Final day. What a joke!

Are you saying that the Advertiser had based it's selection on the presumption of a CD win in the GF :?:

i think its fair enough that Laird was named the coach. He did a great job getting the Doggies into the GF after so many players leaving the season before and after many people had written them off early in the year.

Personally, I think it is great for Roy to be recognised for his work this year. But I still believe the premiership coach deserves the gong before anyone else - the way the Eagles have managed to stay ahead of everyone else and throw off that monkey in the GF was a terrific effort.

I thought the team was chosen based on the minor round performances and on that basis, surely one of Ron Fuller, Andrew Jarman or Robert Pyman should have been named coach of the year. All improved their clubs position from the previous year and made finals. Fuller and Jarman coached their side to four more wins than Laird did, who coached his side to their worst minor round performance since the 90's.

IF the team was chosen to include finals, then surely they should have waited until after the Grand Final to make the decision.

PS. I called the decision ridiculous before the Grand Final was played.

I cannot believe this. Laird is "Coach of the Year"? Absolutely ridiculous. He's been blessed with superior squads, which he inherited, and just sits in the box each week watching his team play.

When did they decide not to give it to the Premiership Coach?

I think the appointment of coach needs to come from a combination of things .. Minor Round W/L improvement, finals performances and Premiership (which should carry additional weight) would all have to come into it.

Can't be based on improvement alone as eventually someone will have set the bar so high that it's impossible to replicate next season even though his team has achieved the ultimate success.

If you are fishing, nice catch. If not, see below.

Whilst I agree that Fuller should be coach of the year, I can't agree with your interpretation of Lairds' output in the coaching box. Don't confuse a composed demeanour with sitting back doing nothing!

Yes, the squad was an outstanding one when he took over and yes the game plan was developed. I have seen first hand the work he has done to that game plan since taking over and what he does in the coaches box is amazing - tactically, one of the best coaches going around. His ability to communicate to players and teach the game plan to newcomers is excellent.

After losing Hay, Hopwood, Healy and Bello (and effectively Steinberner) he still coached them to a GF by filling those holes, effectively with club juniors + Chad O’Sullivan.

Re Ben Haynes.

Has it ever happened that the player who was second in the Advertiser 'Player of the Year' award, voted by the Advertiser journalists, isn't in the best 21 for the Team of the Year, selected by the same journalists?

What were they thinking?
