Sometimes the eyes just lose their sharpness. I've seen many top players fall apart because the eyes weren't what they once were .. Lawrence Rowe a classic example, Wayne Phillips another.

Maybe that's the case with Hussey, but whatever the reason, his Test days should be over at the end of this match. Too many innings for too few runs.

There'll be some changes no doubt, whether this match is lot or not. Not that I think they'll win...I've got them pencilled in as a 20/1 shot from here.

But still - mass panicked sackings is a very English response to adversity, I for one hope they apply a more measured response.

Overall average 3196 runs at 52.39. Good at face value .... but:

First 22 tests: 2288 runs at 81.71
Last 19 tests: 908 runs at 27.51

In his last 12 tests its 477 runs at 23.85

In his first 22 tests he also got 8 of his 9 not outs which pumped up his average. One thing about averages is they normalise over time. Maybe it's just that the Huss got his allocation of great scores up front. Either way, it must be time to move on. I remember posting very similar before the last innings of the South Africa series ... one more innings to prove he's still got it.

He has enough brownie points it seems that a good second innings (and an Ashes win?) might be enough to keep his career on life support. When you compare this decline to Hayden's and then compare the flack Hayden copped compared to the charmed run Mr Cricket has received it makes you wonder how much of this stuff is a popularity contest.

Not just this series have we struggled, India, S AF, and now England. I still think we can win this test, I think we could of done it alot easier with correct selection poicy.

Even if he does, but we still lose the Ashes, he may become a victim of a new broom anyway. It may be all over for him regardless unless we come up with a miracle in this test. As the guys on SBS said tonight, carrying him so long sends completely the wrong message to the other batsman in and out of the side.

I suppose he's done enough now, especially the way Pontng was pumping him up after the game. Is staying for the one-dayers (captain maybe?? - clarke and ponting going home??) I would still go with some youth, but I'm sure he will play next test match now. Damn it!

If he doesn't make a score in the first two Tests back in Australia he must be dropped.

The problem is, is there a batsman in domestic ranks good enough to force his way into the wide at Hussey's expense? I can't see anyone really, apart from the batting order being re-arranged with Hughes to open.

Hodge is mid 30's, Ferguson not up to it yet, there's no one really there demanding to be picked and take Hussey's place in the batting line up.
