It seems pretty clear the WWTFC and SANFL have given up on Thebby.
If the club was interested in making a go of Thebarton, they would demand a strong drawing club and make some effort in promoting the game. When they first went back to Thebby they had good crowds (novelty factor), but the facilities were terrible (i.e. they didn't even have a scoreboard that you could see).
Whilst they have since improved the facilities to a certain extent (i.e. at least you can now see the scoreboard and time clock) they haven't put any effort in to promotion. They only had the northern gates open yesterday. People were leaving the ground at the southern end by slipping through a hole in the fence FFS. That is a disgrace.
The surface is fantastic, the concrete terraces are fantastic, the stands look fantastic - it is all there for the Eagles or SANFL to make a go of it. In cooperation with the SAAFL, they should do up the lights so the Amateur league can use it to maybe play junior night games.
The Eagles could then use the oval once or twice a year and make it an occasion and hopefully garner some more support outside the 800 people that are always at Woodville. There is opportunity if done properly, but the Eagles just see it as a cost because they were relying on the novelty factor to continue through the years when they had three games there, but weren't putting in any effort to attract new people.
Some imagination and clever programming and the WWTFC, SANFL and SAAFL might even make some money out of it. I'd hope and expect the Eagles to be leading the way as they potentially have the opportunity to get the most out of it.
