Australia's limited overs squads for England tour named

Postby Gozu » Tue Aug 11, 2009 6:20 pm

Both the squads were named today to play 8 ODI's and 2 T20 games on this England tour. Ricky Ponting will return home after the 5th Test and will miss the ODI against Scotland, both of the Twenty/20 games and the start of the ODI series against England. In his abesence Michael Clarke will take over the captaincy. Michael Hussey, Peter Siddle and Nathan Bracken have been left out of this T20 squad. Dirk Nannes and Adam Voges both come in. Tim Paine comes into the ODI squad as cover for Brad Haddin. Also Shaun Tait supposedly has a side strain now after those games with Australia A and wasn't considered for the tour.

The ODI squad is:
Ricky Ponting (captain): TAS, 34
Michael Clarke (vice-captain): NSW, 28
Nathan Bracken: NSW, 31
Callum Ferguson: SA, 24
Brad Haddin: NSW, 31

Mitchell Johnson: WA, 27
Brett Lee: NSW, 32
Tim Paine: TAS, 24
Peter Siddle: VIC, 24
Shane Watson: NSW, 28
Cameron White: VIC, 25
* Tim Paine has been selected subject to fitness

The Twenty20 squad is:
Michael Clarke (captain): NSW, 28
Brad Haddin (vice-captain): NSW, 31
Callum Ferguson: SA , 24
Nathan Hauritz: NSW, 27
Ben Hilfenhaus: TAS, 26
David Hussey: VIC, 32
Mitchell Johnson: WA, 27
Brett Lee: NSW, 32
Dirk Nannes: VIC, 33
Adam Voges: WA, 29
David Warner: NSW, 22
Shane Watson: NSW, 28
Cameron White: VIC, 25

certainly does. Clarke IMO shouldnt be there. his record his SHOCKING. IMO i wouldnt play him in the 20/20's. not in our best 15 players and also dont want to affect his sensational test and one day form

Probably agree. Same goes for Ferguson IMO. Some far better 20/20 cricketers out there than him.

What will be the ideal ODI line-up? Who will open? I think it will a combo or Watson, Clarke and Haddin.

My XI is;

1. Watto
2. Haddin
3. Ponting
4. Clarke
5. Hussey
6. Ferguson
7. Hopes or White
8. Johnson or Bracken
9. Hauritz
10. Leee
11. Siddle or Hilfy

I would've liked to see Warner in the ODI squad, he will be a player for the future and all of the hype that surrounded him last season when he debuted would've added enormous pressure on him. Even if he didn't get a game, it would've done him good to learn how they operate on tour and prepare for matches etc.
If we have any dead rubbers it would've done him no end of good to get another opportunity.

I don't think we can have Hussey and Clarke after one another, they both take too long to get going. I would open Clarke and Watson and have haddin at 4 or 5.

Interesting call not to include Stuart Clark, I would think that besides Bracken, he would be the hardest one to score fluently off, you have to take risks to score quickly off of him.

he has never really had a decent crack at international level for one dayers. They obviously don't rate him in that format of the game.

He has been injured for a fair amount of the time since McGrath has retired, it would've been a bit of over-kill to have both of them operating in the same team. Both bowl a similar line and length and around the same pace, he just lacks the arsenal of tricks that McGrath had.

Was the best performed batsmen in the recent Australia A series. His last two Shield innings have been tons. Forget his bowling, he is a quality batsmen.

LM i reckon he may cop the Vanilla Ice label mate...cannot see him being consistently good enough at International level. A bit contradicting having T20 and consistency in same breath but i reckon his Andy Warhol time is up.

The raw talent still deserves more opportunities though, you may well be right, I'd like to be fully convinced that he is not up to it though.
