As much as i hate Clayton, he was right. The umpire made a dreadful error.

I believe that's actually the rule; if you try to rush a point but put it out of bounds it is deemed as deliberate.

If it is that's crazy and completely against the spirit of the rule, if he was deliberatley trying to handpass it for a point then he's quite obviously not deliberately trying to handpass it out of bounds.
All the obvious deliberates I see every week and this gets paid?

Ive seen heaps of cases where a player has tried to deliberately handpass a point and missed and sent it out of bounds with no free paid, if its a different rule when it actually hits the point post then I am amazed.

They just don't like having grey areas where an umpire has to actually make a decision using judgment.
