Traditional rivals to battle for big dollars

Postby Big Phil » Wed Aug 05, 2009 3:03 pm

I know long time rivals Port Magpies and Norwood both still have to get through their respective games this coming weekend, but the Round 20 clash between these 2 sides (Sunday 16th August at Alberton) now has a large financial reward for the victors and with the tough economic climate, the winners will be pretty happy with what they get to pocket.

SANFL arch rivals Port Adelaide and Norwood will play for $20,000 in a winner-takes-all blockbuster next weekend.

The prizemoney has been offered by SA businessman Gordon Pickard in a bid to boost the struggling clubs.

Magpies Commercial Operations Manager Donna Baker said Mr Pickard, owner of Fairmont Homes and Lifestyle SA retirement villages, was moved to put up the money because he wanted to see the clubs return to their former glory.

``Gordon Pickard likes to be involved in sport and understands that Port and Norwood haven’t had success on the field this year, however he knows that both are integral to the SANFL,’’ she said.

``So he has put up a $20,000 winner takes all offer for their next meeting at Alberton.’’

She said Mr Pickard also wanted to encourage as many Port and Norwood supporters to attend the August 15 match at Alberton Oval.

``He believes both teams are on the cusp of turning around their clubs for on and off-field success and he wants everybody to show their support for the clubs which have made the SANFL what it is today,’’ Ms Baker said.

Norwood chief executive Dominic Shepley said SANFL clubs had been through ``a tough 12 months’’ and the Redlegs and Magpies were no exception.

``So Gordon felt the timing was good to support his side and Port Adelaide,’’ Mr Shepley said.

``Gordon’s generosity crosses all levels of football and sport in SA and as Norwood’s major sponsor for many years it’s something we’ve been able to enjoy for a long period of time.

``We’re very confident - we need a win as much as anyone, so we hope we can take the money and the two points.’’

Good stuff and we know both clubs need the cash.

Might talk CP in having a lager or two on the result.....?

This isn't the first time Pickard, a major Norwood sponsor has done this. Maybe a Port sponsor could match him this time around? A $40k booty for the winner would be amazing.

Yes, techincally that is correct, but if a draw was to eventuate, which BTW is probably a real possibility as the 2 teams currently match up pretty evenly, I'm sure they would split the "prize money" down the middle.

Maybe, if the scores were locked after full time, they could play "golden goal" where the first goal scored decides the winner, therefore giving a player the opportunity to kick a six pointer that would be worth $20K !!

It would go some way to helping Norwood pay the $50,000 for the salary cap breach.

Good ideas BP but I've got a better one. If the game is drawn the money goes to the reigning premiers
