Mail & Magarey Medallists..

Postby rd » Tue Jul 28, 2009 10:57 pm

Howdy Spelly.

I believe Dribbler Hawke won a Mail Medal prior to winning his 1937 Magarey Medal and that 1962 Magarey Medallist Ken Eustice won a Mail medal prior to beginning his league career. 1957 Magarey Medallist Ron Benton won a Mail Medal (1960?) after winning his Magarey Medal.

Just curious if any ever other players have done this double & which players won the Mail Medal prior to the Magarey Medal.

Thanks.

Unfortunately I don't have any information on the Mail Medal. Does it matter however, which League it was won in?

No - I'm just curious on the number of Mail Medallists (any league) that also collected a Magarey Medal.

Couldn't recommend more highly the book, "The Mail Medal", by John Gascoyne, as a great read and invaluable reference. To fully understand the dominance of some players like Kangaroo Island legend Roger Williams (seven Medals), the same tally as Peter Kitschke (Hall of Fame entrant). To read about the incredible Bohdan Cybulka, who, after taking up Aussie rules very late after being a soccer player, yet dominated River Murray football with seven medals between 1965 (his SECOND EVER season of Aussie rules) to 1975, is a fantastic read.

Bohdan Cybulka. I started a conversation about him on 5AA a few years ago by sending an email to Graham Cornes.

He came from Murray Bridge to play for Glenelg in the 1967 Reserves finals series. They won the flag and Cybulka was brilliant. I was expecting to see him in the League in 1968 but apparently he went home and never returned. I believe he was a teacher in Murray Bridge for many years.

And to think if Kerley wasn't coach of Glenelg when he ventured down to town he may have played 150 games with Glenelg :)

Cybulka actually started off playing with Tailem Bend where he won 6 medals, before moving to Murray Bridge and winning his 7th with Murray Bridge club Ramblers.

What was the story there? Found it too tough under Kerley, or didn't Kerley rate him?

Not sure exactly, except that it was a personality clash. I would hazard to guess it wouldn't have been the first personality clash Kerley had with a young player.
