Massive News. AFL bosses would be licking their lips at this one, if the move ends up being a successful one it could cause real trouble for the NRL, particularly in Queensland.

Huge news. It would be great to see him be successful it would go a long way towards the AFL becoming truly established in the rugby heartlands.

Actually if they have signed him, I'd assume the AFL are now open to free trading or how does it work ?

Would, say, a Essendon or Adelaide be able to just sign a bloke like they might have done ?

That is a huge news and a huge coup for the AFL. It's exactly the kind of outcome they would have been hoping for from moving into the NRL homeland via the GC and West Sydney expansions.

It also offers some hope that these new teams will, over time, not drain the talent out of the traditional football states but instead drag kids over from NRL.

I get the feeling this may only be the beginning, obviously there has been a long list of NRL players switching codes to Union, but before now not to AFL, this is a massive threat to the NRL and could start a mass exodus of players.

I don't think it is just a marketing ploy, as the article states he was looked at by afl scouts before he was contracted by the broncos, i am sure he will be good for them. I am sure they will do well out of him being there though.

Under the rules, any club can sign any person without needing to go via the draft if that person has not been part of any registered AFL competition in the previous three years. Hunt obviously qualifies, as he's been playing in the NRL.
Carlton used this rule to sign the O'Hailpins from hurling.
Sydney used this rule to sign Jake Orreal.
Collingwood has signed Lachlan Keefe from a soccer background.

the signing counts as one of your rookies, and you get one less selection in the rookie draft

You will find that he did some training sessions with Nathan Buckley, Jason McCartney and Kevin Sheehan and their recommendation on his skills prompted the AFL and the Gold Coast FC to go forward with trying to recruit him.

I remember Sonny Bill Williams saying in an interview that Rugby League was the only code where player payments are going backwards, and that the money Anthony Mundine was on in 1999 would see him be the highest paid player in the NRL today (2008)

So you would assume Karmichael Hunt would be receiving quite abit more coin in the AFL than the NRL, not to mention the amount he will get through endorsements , as you would expect he would be the one the sponsors want marketing their brand, and him to be the face of the Gold Coast AFL team in QLD.

On melbourne radio this morning it was stated that he may be getting 500K a year. Which is about 200K more a year than he was getting with the broncos.

He turned down a 1.2 Million 3 year deal at the Bronco's so only 100k if the figures are correct.
