5000th topic - Who is going to win the Magarey?

Who from your team is a chance at this stage of the season?

From the blues, Tristan Gum is up there and Michael Coad too.
Carn the blues!!!!!

If he keeps playing Taylor Walker will probably poll most votes from Norwood. And I'm not being stupid.

Maybe Gallagher.

Jon Griffin will poll well early in the season but then missed games through injury...

Paul Thomas will poll very well before and after his 6 weeks off with a broken finger...

Ryan Williams will poll well early but form has dropped away terribly the last month...

Chad O'Sullivan, despite having a couple of flat weeks, will probably poll best for Central...

Scott Dutschke is having a career best season and is a real chance as well, is eye catching with his courage as well...

I would expect Ezard to poll the best for the Bloods this year.

Not sure what his odds are now, or what they were at the start of the year, but if I were a betting man, I would put a few dollars on James Ezard as a bit of a smokey.

The bloods have won a few more games which will help, but he has been pretty consistant, even when West have lost games. He should get 3 votes in the win over Centrals for sure.

Nick Lower a very good chance I think.

And no, it's not a good sign when your biggest vote-winning players are AFLies dropping back occasionally.

I sometimes wonder whether the umpires are far too busy with game decisions, to be able
to accurately give best player votes to those who are truly deserving of them, over an entire
game.
;)
But, as this is the system we have, I certainly hope the men in white are starting to notice
Brett Zorzi. Although 2009 has been a shambles for Norwood, Zorzi has been a constant
source of team focussed performance and an inspiration for supporters and players alike IMHO.
He has been one of very few reliable contributors for us and I hope he is rewarded with many
votes. If not Magarey votes, he should be at or near the top for NFC best and fairest.
I would be very surprised if anyone, from any club, would think the SANFL state selectors made
a mistake with Brett's inclusion.

Just like the fight for this years flag, the Magarey Medal outcome will be very interesting.

I would think that James Allan, Rhys Archard and Matty Wright will be the leading poll getters from the Roosters at this stage, on saying that not sure they will poll enough votes to win

Tristan gum is a big chance from the blues, followed by Sheedy and Kurtze. Coad will be up there i reckon but he is not chance due to being suspended.

Gum would be my favourite at the moment as well, particuarly when he had that 5 or 6 week purple pacth of form before getting injured. The only thing that may work against him is sharing votes with team mates and missing a few games with injury.

I think the North on-ballers mentioned above will take votes off each other and Damon White will pop up for votes in the big games he played. Chad O'Sullivan might be a chance to win it because most of his Doggies team-mates, except perhaps Scott Dutschke, have been inconsistant with form throughout the year.

Is it finally time that Mark Mackenzie from the Eagles wins one ? He is very consistent, only missed a couple of games, has also had team mates with very patchy form and has had usual vote getters Treeby and Powell sidelined for lengthy periods with injury.

IMO the winner will come from Chad O'Sullivan (Central), Mark Mackenzie (Eagles), Tristian Gum (Sturt) or James Ezard (West) with Scott Dutschke (Central) as the smokey.

If the umps have been paying attention, Zorzi should poll very well ... but with umpires being umpires, Gallagher will probably poll highest for the Redlegs. He's a midfielder.

How could I forgot about Lower? He would be a big favourite IMO, if only we won a few more games.

I agree that Zorzi should be amongst the highest players to poll well for Norwood, but based on what I have seen live, wacthed on telly and read or listened to reviews of Norwood games, hasn't Zorzi spent more time in the midfield this year than in defence ?

The umpires have to vote for the Magarey, it's an umpires' award. The debate I've been having over the years is it carries far too much prestige for what it is ... just like the Brownlow.

You're right, years ago we saw full forwards, ruckmen, key defenders, even back pocket players winning the award but with the way the game is played these days, the umps haven't got the time to be considering the roles of all players.

There's possibly only the best 2 midfielders from each team who stand a realistic chance of winning it each season.

I think you may have forgotten Brayden O'Hara, personally i think he will be our B&f at this stage, whether that equates to Magarey Medal votes is another thing though.

About 50/50. Played the first 6 games at FB, then got a run on the ball against Glenelg. The following week it was back to FB to stand Chambers from Sturt. Fortunately we've unearthed Stopp and Schulz, and along with Will Young it allows Zorzi to spend more time on the ball these days.

Fair enough AH. I know when Brett speaks on radio he mentions that he really enjoys the freedom of playing in the midfield and with all of his experience, skill and hardness, is definately a valuable asset for the Redlegs when in their on ball brigade. He did of course come over from the Northern Bullants in the VFL as a midfielder but true to his great versatility was able to adapt and be one of the best full backs in the SANFL this decade.

Well we're all flattered that you like our jumpers  and possibly the umps prefer them to the rotting-teeth-breath spray's they get from the Gowans-Gobbers.
