Anyway, the story goes that Cahill's Mum rang the club and said don't be stupid, he's playing for Port.

I doubt whether there's any truth in it at all but it was funny at the time.

By the way, has anyone ever heard Darrell speak in public ... he was the SANFL version of the Flying Doormat! ;)

That one is absolutely correct. He applied for a clearance and the club was unsure why he wanted to leave.

Loved him and Bucky what a roving pair. Dad used to tell me Darrell would be seen at half time of the ressies eating a couple of pies and washing it down with a can of coke.

1980 pre-season, if my memory serves - and yes, Darryl was legendary for his half time diet of pies and cokes :-)

Darrel Hart from Central - dispute with Neale IIRC
.

IIRC Darel Hart had a very good season in 1983 and was our top vote getter in the Magarey Medal. I believe he asked for more money and was told no, so he left and went to NA. Centrals had another rover at the time by the name of John Platten.

In 1980 Darrell who was good mates with Billy Neil ( fitness coach ) who he played alot of golf with aswell as Paul Weston, David Holst & Kym Hodgeman who all played for the Glenelg Football Club.
Darrell who worked at the Glenelg golf club also had alot of other mates that were tied up with the golf & Football clubs of Glenelg which tempted him to make the switch down the Bay, he did venture out there for 6 weeks ( training ) with his mates when an application was made to the SANFL for a clearance, they came back with a $35,000 transfer fee which was placed on his head.
Darrell who at the time was 33 years of age had always had people believing he was 5 years younger & 28 yrs old as he was playing like a young 28 year old & in his prime thought the price was over the top & didn't want Glenelg to pay that sort of money so he went back to Port & signed a 3 year deal & finished off with another 2 premierships ( 80-81 ) to add to his 77 & 79 flags & retired at the ripe young age of 36 in 1982.

Slightly off the original topic, but i reckon i've heard stories of Gary Ablett Snr having a roast meal an hour or so before he was due to play.

True, Ask your Norwood mate Alby Menzel, he will tell you its true.
Darrell used to share a block of chocolate with Bruce Light at half
time of the main game aswell.
Back to the topic, he nearly went to Glenelg and had a substantial offer
to go to West Adelaide also. He must of stayed at Port because of the
Kitchener Buns.
