Don't need to chuck a sickie when you work under flexible conditions. Silly thing is, a couple of times I have been real crook, but I have come in anyway because something had to be done on that day.

No point having a day off when you're sick, plenty of point when you're well! The golf game's not gonna work on itself you know...

The way i see it is there are some people that will push themselves to go to work when they are just about on their deathbed, and there are plenty of people that will take a sick day for something very minor like abit of a sniffle, so why should the ones that harden up and do the right thing be at a loss compared to those that are basically abit slack?
Unless an employer offers some sort of reward or bonus at the end of the year for not taking sick days, then taking a sickie is fair game.

In the latter years of my employing staff - which stopped completely back in 1988 - I employed only casuals.
It cost more, but as no one got paid who didn't turn up, just like I didn't, it made for a reliable staff and a lot less hassles for me, and for my wife, who had to come in with me and fill in as receptionist when we got short notice, even when she was ill herself. [After 1988 I employed only independent contractors.]

Sick Leave is a concessional benefit for use if you are genuinely ill, not part of your annual leave to be cashed in if you don't want to use it.
Unions turning it into an "entitlement" to use as extra leave are making it disincentive to employ full time staff.

EDIT: There was a big push for it under the last Labor government - Hawke/Keating - that's why I changed my set up to casuals only then.

I am the sole worker on most of my experiments and trials, which is why I've had to come in. For the purposes of proper replication, if an experiment is due to conclude on day 21, it will conclude on day 21 - in sickness or in health :D

I've generally steered clear of anyone if I'm feeling crook.

i have recently employed 5 people 3 of which turn up for rostered shifts the other 2 have taken sickies to the tune of 2 days a week when they turn up for next shift they will be terminated i dont like to do this as cost to get them trained is 2 grand thus 4 k down the drain. if they are genuinly sick i have no prob with that but its obvious they dont want to work it is unfair on their workmates who are asked to do longer shifts.i havnt had a sick day for 6 years.

Annual leave days or unpaid leave would be asking to much organisation and honesty I assume. ;)

Isn't that just a matter of planning far enough ahead and negotiating early? It was when I worked in the public hospital system..

Concessional benefit is a nice term .
My company decided to take the sick leave section off our pay packets .By this I mean telling the worker how many if any sick leave hours they had left in their benefits .They will not put it back on because in their words "the employee will use the sick leave(if sick) and are not in fact entitled to 10 days sick leave a year".
BUT have swine flu in the work force (which we did) and anyone even looking like sneezing is sent to their doctor with orders not to return until medically fit.One young chap returned(after being sent home the day before) with a cold was told off for being at work .He replied with my doctor cleared me its just a cold I don't have swine flu in fact the doctor was annoyed at him for going to him in the first place.

Now have I ever chucked a sickie .Yep I have biggest problem I normally end up sick a week latter .My old employer was better 1 sick day I didn't need a cert from a doctor .My current employer 2 single days a year then u need a cert for every sick day single or more.and I try not to go home from work sick current employer always demands I see a quack.Normally ends up in having two or more days off if they let me go home rest I'd be back the next day.
Back to the no sick days on the pay packet if we know we have no sick days left we wouldn't take a sickie. ;) even heard of fellow workers with no sick days left being phoned at home and being told you dont have any sick hours . Worker Can I take the days off as annual leave ?No your sick its sick leave you may take it as long service leave.Umm I have a cert for two days.Boss no you cant use long service leave you will need to use annual leave .But you said I couldn't Boss umm you'll have to as u have no sick leave .No joke thats what happened to a work colleague ;)

Lady I work with was bragging about her hubby never staying home when sick always going to work .she then looked at me and said he's not soft like some men .
Cheeky me thought and then said so he'd go to work with swine flu as he never takes a sickie.Of course not he would have to stay home.So he in fact would take a sickie ;)

Simple fact most people will hassle you if your sick and at work .but the same morons will then complain if u stay home sick .A catch 22 if u will.

Here's a good lurk, Im sure, most people dont know

If you are on annual leave and feel sick, get a doctors certificate; and its sick leave, not annual leave

So you can be, on a beach, in Phuket, and get a local doctor to give a sick ticket.......

Only problem............you have to find a doctor in Thailand who's prepared to take a bribe for a certificate...............not easy.........
