I think you will find that there must be an issue with Shrek. While my article last week caused some controversy I think the stuff that Hosie and No Mercy are referring to may have something to do with the big green one.

I and Hose decided on replacing my article this week with the PHOS response just to be fair and give right of reply. It seems I'm not as precious about being written about than some......

In the past clubs question he mentioned Ports Districts & Port Adelaide. Don't tell me he deliberately forgot the 2 seasons he spent at Gepps Cross or was it an oversight?
We loved the guy, one of the best on-field leaders the club has had for a long time, we were very sorry to see him go. Good onya Alfy, a great bloke but a shocking memory but what else would you expect from a "stevedore". When I was a few years younger they were known as "wharfies" but I guess I am getting on a bit!

This week's editorial regarding iScore is nothing short of bizarre!

Having seen the on-line scores system in operation first hand in Victoria over two years before I moved West, most clubs have no issue at all with getting scores in by 5.30pm. The 42-team Eastern Football League averages around 41-42 responses by that deadline each week and usually that club is moments away from submitting their details. The information used (q by q scores, best and goalkickers) are used for the two Melbourne-based Sunday and Monday papers.

In WA, it's slightly different as they need to ring scores through by 5.30 - they don't need to submit the goalkickers and best players as the Sunday Times and the West Australian don't use this information.

To give you an insight into press deadlines, I am involved with the District cricket competition in Perth. Play on each match day ends around 6.20pm and the WACA has to have prepare the eight First Grade scorecards and the summary scores for Seconds through to Under 15 and submit them to the Sunday Times by no later than 7.00pm.

In summary, that's 40 minutes to receive eight score cards by fax, type them up in the required format and also receive and process the summary scores of 40 other matches by phone or fax and submit them to the press. We always hope that matches don't run late ... especially First Grade matches - a 6.45pm finish would be a killer for us!

The Sunday Times' statewide copy deadline is 7.00pm, which allows the newspaper's workers the chance to work out how much space needs to be allocated to country sports news (edition one) and metro sports news which include District cricket, baseball, etc. (for the other editions). The same applies to other sections of the paper.

This scenario would be the same with any Sunday metropolitan newspaper in Australia. Correct me if I am wrong, but all country and amateur scores are in all editions of the Sunday Mail (including the country edition).

The editor, sub-editors and journos, etc. need to know what space they have available and what goes in and what comes out ... could you imagine the mess if everyone had until 9pm to deliver copy - if there was a space in the paper which needed to be filled imagine the calamity where people have to find and write a story in a matter of minutes to fill the space! They would be trying to create two complete newspapers in a matter of three hours ... one for the city and one for the country!

The country edition is printed around 8pm and the metro ones start around 10pm, which allows for things such as late news, stumps scores for Shield or Test cricket and other news that develops up until around 8-9pm.

The i-Score process can be rather easy if there is someone with a laptop at the ready and is well prepared. Usually one team official will be recording the goalscorers and the q by q scores during the game - so if they are relayed to someone at a laptop ASAP after a match ends then there is ample time to do a 5-10 minute job in a 45-odd minute period. Good organisation means that the job is done with a minimum of fuss ... if there was no internet connection available after the game for a significant period of time then that is different.

If you don't want the information in the Sunday Mail, then non-submission is the easy way to do it and keep the footy public partly-informed. We have been in the 21st century for almost ten years now and good economics says that the days of copy takers in an office should be a thing of the past especially with the technology we now have available - you only need someone 'cutting and pasting' from the League office to send to the media outlets and that information is out before 6pm.

All the leagues in Melbourne do it the same way as iScore and many of the leagues have the match informatiion for League and Reserves on their websites by 6pm for the benefit of the football public ... thanks to the diligence of club officials.

According to the Axeman Plympton is conceding 59.42 goals a game, not bad for being on top of the ladder, dont worry about our defence, if we're on top while still conceding nearly 60 goals a game then we must have lockett, dunstall, ablett, matthews, mckenna, j smith up forward!!!

Personally, I don't agree with the alleged $200 fine for non-submission of scores. A fine of $20 is far more appropriate if fines are to be levied.

Unless there are other reasons it seems a little high.....im sure the league is aware of what a club must do to raise $200 in funds to pay these fines.

I thought that having made the finals, they deserved a team listing or maybe even a mention. Not everyone can be a League player, some people are happy to be B-grade players because they know their limitations - but they cannot keep the Budget as a souvenir of playing in the finals because the reserves players aren't there.
