Prospect Oval was in surprisingly good nick, given recent conditions, except for the cricket pitch area. Having the centre circle slightly on the grandstand side seemed to put the lopsided oval back into sync, somehow. Westies sent out a search party for their Reserves. Missing in action the week before, they were still safely out of sight in the first half of today's game, until the half-time siren. By that time, North had given a clinic in everything except putting a side away on the scoreboard. An all-in scuffle right on that half-time siren had West coming out for the third quarter a different side.
It was that sort of game where you say "We're not totally out of this game", even though you should be. That soon became "We're a silly chance here", then "we're right in this", then "we should win from here". We did, despite only having 18 players for the last half and a bit.
The siren to start the league game sounded with the score 3.0 to North, zero to the Bloods. Well, that's what it seemed like, so perhaps that was the score after 4 minutes. North did as they pleased, looking polished, too tall, too quick, too smart and too skilled, with James Allan getting the footy frequently. Quarter time it was 5.4 to 1.0, 109 possessions to less than 50. West responded in the second quarter, which turned into a stalemate, mainly due to West not knowing how to kick goals from 20 metres out, or 5 metres if there was an open goal. Status quo at half-time, with James Allan getting it frequently.
West shifted Daniel Webb into ruck in the third quarter and he jumped all over the North rucks to give West first use of the ball. The Bloods lifted and dominated the quarter, with Ryan Bennett, the lad from Renmark who had been selected a couple of weeks previously out of the blue, kicking 4 goals for the quarter and handing another one to Sal Hassan. James Allan got the ball frequently.
Only 2 goals in it at 3/4 time. It was the sort of game where you said "we're not out of this".
We were, as West ran out of gas and North finished off better, kicking a couple of junk time goals when the game was over to extend the margin to 5 goals. That was probably a fair indication for the day. West looked off the boil most of the day after the previous week's effort. North looked very good, but only scored 12 goals from a s...load of possession, even though James Allan got the footy a lot in the last quarter.
Best players: There were 2 outstanding players. James Allan (see above) was one, but not B.O.G perhaps, although that was arguable. I thought Phil Davis in defence was superb, with 30 possessions and 8 marks, several of them contested and he got my best on ground vote. As for other North players, there were plenty of good performances: As a non-North person, I'm only guessing, but Thiele, Armstrong and Wright were consistently good. A special mention to Stribling, who tagged the in-form James Ezard out of the game and contributed positively as well.
For the Bloods, Ryan Bennett, with 5 goals 2 and a goal assist, out of a total of 7 goals, was probably best, with Ben Fisher, Wade Champion and a terrific game from Steven Morris leading the rest. Ryan Ferguson and Damon White had a good battle, with Ferguson comfortably on top under a weight of possession, until White got 2 goals (including an F.A.D) in the last few minutes.Random observations: I was unfortunate enough to sit in the stand near the Rooster's supporter who leads the "Roosters, clap, clap, clap" chant after a goal. He went through his whole repertoire from "Roosters, clap, clap, clap", to "Roosters, clap, clap, clap". I suppose it keeps him happy.
Secondly, I admired the North crowd's appreciation of the umpiring. Favoured by a 30 - 21 free kick count and 4 of their 12 goals coming from frees, to West's 1, they convinced themselves that the umpires were murdering themThis, despite the fact that my hero, Tony Dey, was umpiring.
In any event, 51 frees in a game is way too many and spoiled the game, which often didn't reach great heights. As for Tony Dey, he didn't disappoint me, continuing his eagle eye against any West Adelaide rules infractions. His eagle eye morphed into a whistle blow on many occasions. My hero again, Tony
I went home, strangely not that upset. The last few weeks had been tough and the Centrals win might have affected the mindset early, by which time the game was nearly over. In recent seasons, that start would have translated into a belting, but to their credit, they've developed the habit of fighting back. The trend is up, the skills need a lot of work, but the canvas is filling up nicely.
All in all, a deserved win to North, who played some great footy at times. I'm not sure that their style will hold up against some higher-ranked teams, but they're still learning a new style, so we'll wait and see.
As for the Bloods, they'll just keep getting better.

Move one of them to the ground announcers/PA system position. They could not do a worse job, it could not be possible.

Its funny how the South song gets played at North matches than it does at South matches!
