I was under the impression Nelson was lured to Willaston to bolster the A grade ruck stocks and gave your club some valuable service on and off the field. When Oconnor left he took a couple of other players with him not just Nelson i am led to believe.

The guy played A grade football at your club , just how good was he at feeding your smaller brigade first use of the pill ? Did he provide you a target up forward when resting like many good big men do ? Does any game in particular stick in your mind where he didnt contribute ?

Saying the man couldnt play to save himself couldnt be right .....

I beleive nelson went to willaston after only managing to fill a goal umpiring position at barossa for most of his career.

Lets just say he didn't win the respect of his on-ball team and spent any time he wasn't being punished in the middle on the bench - not up forward. It was very uninspiring to watch him play with a body like a portaloo and a heart the size of pea.

Guess the writing was on the wall for willaston when he was playing A Grade and IMO the club wouldve been better served playing some kids like matt green or liam pratt that year. Only oconnor would know why the hell they persisted with a guy that is better suited in a white jacket than on the football field.

Bit rough there Pinch Hitter, dont agree with that for a second.
Fair enough playing kids, but Nelson gave his all for his team mates and club on and off the field and still created that contest, Green and Pratt had their chances that season but were not up to it!
Willaston definately had no one else that was capable of rucking in 2003 other than Jeremy Johncock.

Honestly Pinch i can see that you don't like Nelson but to shit can him like that is a low act really. Some opinions are best kept to one self!! For someone like Nelson who gave his all (maybe not up to A grade standard) and to still be hit with abuse like urs really makes me wounder about your good self!!! The guy would never say a bad thing about anybody and atleast deserve the repect for donning the willaston Jumper on.. The Jumper that your supposed to support. Give credit where it is due pinch.

Obviously Pinch Hitter is a staunch Donnybrook that wears his heart on his sleave. Cant knock him for giving his honest opinion about a player that pulled on the red & blue.

Every club has expectations of there players when they pull on the guernsey and i would have to say Sponge doesnt fit the Donnybrook mould.

I recall seeing Sponge take on the rucking duties at Dutton Park. A smaller Nathan Brady climbed all over him and palmed the plum to his on ball brigade at will. The cumbersome ruckman from Willaston loafed around the ground like a glazier and was used as a launch pad by a smaller oppostion ruckmen and not once used his lumbering frame to physically impose himself on a contest.

That reminds me , i am not missing those cold and wet Tuesday and Thursday nights at the Caravan Park.

B&S troy bennie did the ruckwork in 03.

MM i will tell it like i see it whether you like it or not. i don't like deserters that come from other clubs and bags the sh-t out of where they come from and then go back to that club just indicates a weak character to me which was evident in his attack on the footy. I don't know the big galoof personally, but there is no credit to passed on here in my eyes.

Of course. Have great memories with the donnybrooks in the late 80's early 90's, only wished we'd gone back to back in 89.

Central's, South and to a lesser extent Barossa Dist. don't get looked after for finals for a reason - their facilities are third world.

Pinch Hitter i have idea who you might be. Sorry i dont know your name but i remember a Willaston player, 5ft 2 rover around that time who was rotated off the bench and had a kamakazie attack on the pill. Correct me if i am wrong but did you wear number 3 ?

Reading your comments about current Barossa Districts coach Ryan Nelson, i suspect you might not have enjoyed roving his ruck work.

Pac Man i think your getting muddled up with that number 13 who was built like a penguin nickname was Stewy or something, he only played B Grade.
To Ryan Nelson's credit he didnt have the athletic ability like Benny did but gave much more while he was there on the field than that other big guy Willaston had called Jabba cant remember Jabba ever getting in the best players against us. I remember Johncock and Field they were always hard to match up on.
However we won the flag in 03 so who cares!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A major final can make anywhere from $5,000 to $15,000 and to have one each year is favourtism by the directors to prop the light clubs up. What about the Gawler clubs? How can we ever improve facilities if we dont get the big finals? Barossa and Light is alive and well!!!

Hear what you are saying about Freeling and Kapunda with finals but don't throw Tanunda into this with the Barossa & Light quote. Tanunda is the club to hold the least amount of finals over the past decade, I think it is 2, we had the GF in 05 and I think we had a final in 98, so it is about time we got one. Nuri are also another club that get an very good run on the finals. They should be shared around equally.

puro was a bigger waste of space than nelson its surprising that peanut could even get through an A grade warm up. Johncock and Field were genuine guns tho and stewy in the two's was an enigma u won't find a better bloke in local footy.
