Yeah, I dropped by Prospect Oval this arvo and caught the first half of North v Central Under 17's and it was absolutely pi$$ing down for the half I was there with the ground in shocking condition, especially the middle where the cricket pitch is. Would think with more rain forecast during the week, the ground will not hold up by the weekend and will make for sloppy, muddy conditions for the North v West league game on Saturday.

Just what our grounds dont need at this time of the year, more games. Especially with the dumb draw the SANFL made with so many games at Prospect mid winter.

This might be a stupid question but I'll ask anyway. Is this U17 championships a true indication of the best U17 from each club. For instance are there guys who played U18's on Saturday then play during the week then again this weekend in the U18? Or are the teams made up of players who can't make an U18 team?

Is the idea of them to keep juniors in the SANFL system to some degree?

Centrals U17s side is made up largely of players from the U16s earlier in the season.

Not sure what other clubs do and I really have no idea what the SANFL is thinking by having a U17 comp - given that the U17 comp wasn't originally part of this seasons plans it may be a way to keep the U16s around, next year I expect to see a full season U16 comp with no U17 carnival.

I agree with you there Wedgie but thankfully common sense has prevailled...

I did sneak a look at Prospect yesterday as mentioned above and the ground looked shocking and will probably not hold up for this weekend.

I saw photos from the game at Elizabeth on Monday and the state of Hamra Homes was not great either, but of course wont be as bad as grounds with cricket pitches.

As mentioned above, common sense has seen today's games between Central and South shifted from Elizabeth Oval out to Salisbury Oval.

Popped in there this morning for a quick look and when I left at half time, I think the scores were prety close, the Panthers might have been up by a goal or two.

I thought the standard wasn't too bad and there were 2 young lads that stood out from Centrals. Wearing his father's number, young Jake Coffee, son of Doggies player Grant, is a tall wingman who seemed to find plenty of the ball, kicking a nice snap goal.

With the long flowing locks exactly the same as his father, young Jake Platten seemed to find a bit of the ball himself. Wearing number 4, he is much much taller than John but looked pretty impressive playing on the ball and across half back. Hopefully 2 future stars for the Dogs.

Will post all results from the day when the SANFL put them up later this afternoon...

What Sturt are doing is playing a mixture of players that played in the U/16's this year with some players that just cant make the 18's but are training with them, and some other players that they want to have a look at. The concept used to be mainly for the country players in the clus zone.

Postby supercoach » Wed Jul 15, 2009 6:20 pm

There has always been a 17's country carnival and was always in April (first term holidays). It enables the country lads to experience a league club and participate against the best country lads going around.

This year is primarily still the same but they have incorporated it with the 15's, not bad in theory. There are lads that have played SANFL under 18's playing in this but they can only have played 3 games in that comp. Its good to see a few of the under 16 country academy boys running around and doing well. 4 or 5 in particular are exiting and its hard to believe could not make the state team. They obviously don't play for the eagles or norwood. Good week of footy though in all grades.

Hard not to be anything but cynical with anything to do with SANFL junior footy at the moment.

Yeah they've had various U/17 carnivals for the holidays.

originally they combined the 10 clubs into North, South East and West zones and played a round robin carnival in the april holidays.

West: Port and Torrens
North: Woodville, North and Centrals
East: Sturt, West??? (west in the East zone??) and Norwood
South: Glenelg and South

Then they made it each team had their own U/17 country team and played a la the U/15 carnival but played in April like the U/15 SAmboy Cup.

Now they've made it a hybrid U/17 competition.

Hopefully teh 16s go all year next year.

Good call am bays and supercoach above. Wise old heads. Hopefully the SANFL stop pissanting around with the fabric of footy in this state and get it right next year. Was over in sydney last week and melb the week before and the standard of the 16's and 18's has dropped nationally - No doubt about that, despite all the who ha. Most pundits all said the picture is not as rosey unfortunately as the powers that be wish us to believe.

Saw the port / sturt today and yesterday centrals and the games were a good standard despite the weather. A full 16's program next year would be good but keep the 17 country for the kids in the holidays and no longer have overage players in 18"s.
