Didn't South win at Alberton last year under Cahill???
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I think it's hard to blame Clay for all the results!

The CLUB has to sit down and do a MAJOR self analysis. I believe that Clay has to stay, create stability rather than another change!

How can you not blame the coach??? ....he has to be accountable.

A MAJOR self analysis was done with the so called "Morris report"

Port were undermaned today and it was the perfect chance to capitalise on that.....we did not.

Yes, Cahill won at Alberton last year :?

A 59 point loss to the 2nd bottom side is just not acceptable IMO

The one thing South appeared to have done right was retain most of the playing list this season, then actually add to that list, the only losses from the squad were Travis Baird who struggled from Vic to make it at SANFL level and Prendergast who in the twilight of his career returned home to Vic.

There appear to be no shortage of people that want to see Clay Sampson given the required extension to his contract and various good reasons are given why that should be so.

What is sending alarm bells ringing loud and clear for me at the moment is the win loss ratio of Clay Sampson as opposed to Jack Cahill. Jack got the runs on the board against Glenelg who were the then top side of the competition and another win over Port at Alberton which if you look at Souths appalling record at Alberton - one win in thirty years at one point, it is hardly nothing to write off easily.

Clay Sampson clearly has a better list at his disposal than what Jack Cahill did and the results have gone steeply downhill since Jack Cahill left the club. It is the explanation of this fact that no one seems willing to offer an explanation for. Although I dont have the statistics, I dont feel that the overall age of the players at South is any less than at any other SANFL club and I dont feel that is even remotley an excuse for not just the losses but the thrashings the club have had and especially today.

Its no secret that Port have their share of problems with a lean list, players that have left the club and their best player suspended by the SANFL tribunal, the club was previously second to bottom on the ladder. It would hardly be unreasonable to expect to see South win it today, or at least a result that was close, yet we got an outright flogging today and I think that every area of the club, including the coach has to be brought into consideration.

The coach is responsible, and on the basis of the results achieved this season with the list we have, I think it would be appropriate for our Senior Coach to offer the club his resignation to the club at the end of the season if things cant be improved any more. Not to slight him, yet Clay is an example of fruit that was picked well before it was ripe, had he have been put through the two year mentoring process under Jack Cahill that the club intended, then things could well be different, yet if we are going to be facing losses like these with the current group and coaching staff, then I do think we have nothing at all to lose by changing it either. If people feel as I do that Roy Laird or Mark Mickan could do a better job, then lets go out and get someone that is of that calibre to coach the side in 2010, we can hardly do any worse.

Bitterly disappointing effort this afternoon

A scrappy first quarter saw Port kick away in time on, opening up a 4 goal lead with the breeze at 1/4 time. Port opened the 2nd in the similiar fashion, the lead out to 29 points before South actually started to play some decent footy. Six straight goals had them in front. A couple of late goals to Port stiffled the run, the locals with a one goal lead at the half.

South dominated the first 15-20 minutes of the 3rd, but only had a couple of goals to show for their efforts. The ball spent large portions of time in the South forward 50 but the delivery and decision making going forward was terrible. Port kicked a couple of goals on the counter attack, and like the first two quarters dominated the time on period, a 5 goal lead at 3/4.

South had a 3-4 goal breeze in the last, but failed to kick a major ( i think..), Turner missing one from 25m in the opening minutes, Warren not being paid a hanger in the goal square a few minutes later. Port ran away with it, brushing off tackles and making a mockery of the South defence.

Only 2 goals after half time in a deplorable performance. Farmer played his best game for the club, Sandery and Williams again servicable, Cockshell worked hard, but again we only manged to kick 10 goals.

The aftermath of the game was interesting, with Clay sitting the boys down about 25 minutes from the boundary, giving them what appeared to be a fair dressing down. This probably went on for at least 5 minutes or so, certainly not something I've seen in a while.

We've been Sturt's whipping boys for a few years now and it's hard to see anything but another belting coming up next week :?

I am amazed that people keep calling for Sampsons head. Have you been a bit more satisfied over the last month or so although not winning they have not been disgraced. I think South supporters should be getting behind their coach a bit more which may create a bit of security rather than blaming him all the time. I bet the club is wrapped to have supporters like this.

Harley d, I bet the club is wrapped just to have supporters that have put up with mediocrity and lack of success for so long....dont think many others supporters would!!!
As for not being disgraced, getting beaten by the 2nd bottom team by 59 pts not a disgrace???? You got to be kiddiing me.....
Everyone at the club is ACCOUNTABLE (a term the club uses quite a bit - A Key word!!!) and that includes the coach.

I am not talking about just this game though , I agree its not a great result and I understand you being annoyed . I am certain they are grateful for their supporters as their are a very small number but you cant seriously believe that attacking a guy in his first year is fair. I dont believe your club would be wrapped with the thoughts of some South people. For some reason a few on here want to bring Sampson down.

i can't believe you south blokes, they are a team of kids with no ruckman atm & they will have ups & downs which include mental lapses which obviously happened today especially time on of the 3rd term (which is where the game was lost) & you could tell despite the breeze that the south boys had dropped their heads at 3/4 time, i know they are 2 or so years away but surely you can see light at the end of the tunnel ? both teams had shocking turnovers & delivery into the forward lines all day, the pleasing thing for port would be they had by my recollection (although i'm not sure who kicked the last goal) 12 individual goalkickers.....looking forward to the bays beating port next week ;)
