Premiers with biggest loss during the year

Postby dedja » Mon Jul 06, 2009 10:52 pm

Not sure if this one has come up before Spelly.

Each of the teams currently in the 5 (except North) have had a match this year in which they were belted to the tune of 75-80+ points.

What is the biggest losing margin in a given game during the year for a team that has utlimately won the flag?
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

I can throw one up that would go close I would think.

1984: Round 14, Elizabeth Oval: Central District 26-15 (171) defeated Norwood 12-4 (76)

95 point loss to Norwood who went on to win the flag.

Bays had a ten goal loss to West in 1986 and we lost the 2nd Semi in 1934 by over 15 goals....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

And the record is in 1934 (131 points):

Round 3 1934
Port 8.4 12.8 19.13 33.19 (217)
Glenelg 0.0 4.7 9.9 12.14 (86)

This is an awesome stat. One of my favourites. I'm guessing as the Bays won the GF it would be the biggest turn around from 2nd semi to GF. Spelly????

Also North lost to Central by 80 or so points in Round 1 of 1987.

It was actually only 65 points:

2nd Semi Final 1934
Port 7.5 11.7 18.13 23.21 (159)
Glenelg 3.3 8.9 10.10 13.16 (94)
Adelaide, 24934

The largest loss sustained by a premier who lost the 2nd Semi was 73 points by Port in 1994. That was also the biggest turnaround from that match to the Grand Final (110 points), until 2006 (112 points).

... and I still don't know how the Eagles lost the '94 GF.

The Port supporters were in the bar from mid-first term thinking it was all over ... the Eagles were 5-6 goals up at one stage IIRC, then Chinever got the bastards back into the game. Always remember when the Mapgpies hit the front and all the Eagles heads dropped to signal it was all over.

Something that may interest you Spelly. There have possibly been more extreme cases than this over the years, but in the 1986 SAFA finals, Pooraka defeated Payneham by 23 goals in the 2nd Semi, and Payneham turned the tables in the GF to win by 12 goals. A 35 goal turnaround.

Certainly not a premiership team, but whenever Callington win their next game in Hills football, that will be a turnaround of at least 40 goals, even if its just a one point margin, from their last encounter with the losing team.

What was the damage to Westies the day the Big Jumbo Prince kicked 15 against them in '83?
Dare say it would have been a substantial margin & the Bloods went on to win the flag against Sturt!!

I'd love to know what changes to the teams happened in that time. That's crazy really.
