Rnd 15 - Port v Panthers @ Alberton (Sun 11/7)

Postby Big Phil » Mon Jul 06, 2009 2:32 pm

The Magpies are hosting the Panthers on Sunday at Alberton which should be another interesting contest, although there is some talk this fixture could be switched to the Saturday (10/7) so it doesn't clash with the Power.

The Maggies will be dissapointed with the hard fought loss to the Eagles while the Panthers are showing weekly improvement and took it up to the Bays last weekend.

This will be a close game that could go either way I think. I have a funny feeling the Panthers may notch up their 2nd win of the year but the Magpies were so impressive for 3 and 1/2 quarters at Woodville.

I cant decide as yet so will tip - DRAW !!

Again we should be very competetive. We need another forward option with Cockshell currently in the ruck.
Definately a game we can win so I hope the team can really deliver a hard four quater effort.
Fade away for ten minutes like we did against the bays and we will cop the same result.
Port are a pretty decent side with a couple of match winners like Clayton and Achee so if we can curb thier influence we will give ourselves a real shot of getting win number two!
Panthers by 15pts!! ;)

How is he going playing in ruck? Didnt think he enjoyed playing there on occaisions with Norwood and was one of the reasons why he left to South.

Fair chance Jeremy Clayton wont be playing in this game, he faces the tribunal yet again, tonight for a striking charge on the Eagles Luke Jarrad.

Was talking to a Port supporter today, and even he said although a good player, he's (Clayton) is just a glorified sniper...

Hope he gets 2 weeks so he missed playing the Bays again

Sniper is a very strong word in football terms, I'll happily admit he tests the limits of fair play but I dont think we have any 'snipers' in the game anymore.

Granger wasnt a sniper ..............he wasnt that clever . He always just belted blokes regardless of where the ump was. Alan Stringer was the worst , start a fight and then go running....literally.

He wasn't in Salisbury's or Stringer's class as a sniper.

I, along with many other Port and indeed SANFL fans would be more than happy to sit and listen to you tell the story of the day you saw Darren Smith start a fight..... :-ss

Looking forward to this one. Port without Clayton can only help us. South have been more than competitive in recent times, and with "the creche" becoming more consistent have troubled league leaders Centrals and Glenelg in recent weeks.
Port will need to play well to secure the points. ;)

As I recall him playing, Mr. Smith's specialty was to aim a tolchock squarely at his opponent's gulliver in a marking contest, under the guise of a crude spoil attempt. With his victim prostrate, his victim's teammates running in spoiling for a rumble, and his own teammates running in to supply one, Smith would then slink away.

The memory is a little fuzzy now - deliberately, given the usual result of Glenelg-Port games of the era - but I reckon he pulled the above stunt in the '89 Foundation Cup final, as one example.

Heart beats true,Cockshell is the only real bloke we can put in the ruck as Parry is injured and Mckernan is playing with the crows. We have a bloke in the ressies Billings who is ok but probably not up to league level yet.
Cockshell played quite well against the tigers and although his prefered position is up forward sometimes due to other circumstances you just have to play where the team needs you!
James Turner has been playing solid footy in the reserves the past month and must get a crack in the league side against Port. We need more goal kickers and Turner will give us a good target!
Looking forward to the game and truly believe we have a good shot at winning this one!

I've never really understood why Cockshell's preferred position is CHF .. He has the size, pace and all-round athleticism to be a lethal ruckman and be involved in the play a lot more than a CHF would.
