FORMER Sydney Swans player Daryn Cresswell is expected to be extradited to Queensland on fraud charges.

Cresswell, 38, was arrested at North Sydney police station about 2pm Monday and charged on outstanding warrants.

A NSW police spokeswoman said the six warrants related to fraud offences that had allegedly been committed in Queensland.

"It is expected Queensland police will be seeking his extradition when he appears in Manly local court tomorrow (Wednesday)," the spokeswoman said.

Cresswell returned to NSW this year after quitting the Tasmanian Devils TAC Cup side mid-season last year and heading overseas.

It is alleged the former assistant coach of the Brisbane Lions and Geelong owed about $100,000 from his time with the Tasmanian club.

Cresswell signed on in January as playing coach with Sydney AFL Division One side Manly-Warringah.

Manly-Warringah Football Club president Peter Kay knew nothing of the arrest when contacted by the Herald Sun last night.

"I'm shocked and surprised. I can't shed any more light on it," he said.

"I'm still in the process of attempting to track down what exactly has happened."

Cresswell played a handful of games with the NSW club this season and spent much of the first half of the season on the sidelines coaching.

Mr Kay said Cresswell showed no signs of trouble or stress when he last saw him at the weekend.

"We came off a fantastic victory on Saturday against third place and we've consolidated our spot in second position," he said.

"The attitude of him and the playing group and the club was very positive after the game on Saturday."

In April this year, Cresswell told the Herald Sun that addictive gambling habits had wiped away most of the money he made during his 244-match career.

He was officially declared bankrupt in the Federal Magistrates' Court in Melbourne, owing more than $575,000.

At the time, Cresswell told the Herald Sun he did not want anyone to feel sorry for him.

"This is all my doing," he told the Herald Sun.

"You gamble, and you're taking a risk. That's what I did. I gambled, and it got me."
You're my only friend, and you don't even like me.

Sad how many footballers and even just people in the community Gambling does get hold of due to its addictive nature, even more concerning is how much taxation the Government profits out of someones misery like this....

Sorry for being callous, but I have absolutely no compassion for people who gamble their life away ... I've seen it first hand and it's not a disease it's just plain greed.
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

Shame in Cresswell's case, because I reckon he still had a lot to offer in a non-playing football career which he's most likely blown to smithereens now.

From Creswell's comments, it appears he agrees with you. He was fully aware of what he was doing, he took the risk, he failed.

A very wise man once told me, "If you must gamble, never wager what you cannot afford to lose". When I used to bet on the horses, I always followed that advice and I never ended up in any strife whatsoever. It's only people who believe in easy money who end up in trouble.
