I dont see many articles about new equipment being purchased courtesy of SA Lotteries, or a new scientific breakthough which was made due to the generous contribution from SA Lotteries.

The 'putting money back into public hospitals' line sounds a bit like the McDonalds 'healthy menu' i think.

If you would care to do a little research on that PR statement and read the annual report from the 2007/08 financial year (available here) you will find that South Australian hospitals benefited $91 million during that period. A total of 1.9 billion has been given since 1967. Hell even the State Sport and Recreation fund pocketed $218 000 bringing their total to $8.2 million since 1987.

While it's true that the odds are seriously stacked against winning, a ticket is a cheap way to dream for a few days. Putting the same few dollars on a footy match or something just doesn't have the same "dream appeal". Life can be somewhat serious/monotonous sometimes, so I reckon a "what would I do if I win..." opportunity is worth the relatively small outlay. Doesn't mean that every player is ignorant of the odds. Each to their own.

Well thats great Heater, but once again...where is all this money going? Why are hospitals struggling to buy medical equipment or pay for more nurses and doctors? If $91M is being shelled out, why the need for foundations (real charities) at each of the public hospitals? I know at Flinders they have been trying to raise about $20M for a new cancer centre for several years. If $91M is being shelled out, you would think something like this would be up and running by now? I just dont like the way organisations like SA Lotteries claim to put money back into non-for-profit organisations in their marketing messages. It is misleading IMHO.

On the news last night, they had a QEH (I think it was QEH) spokesman who said that the money will be put towards research/researchers in their hospital.

You're picking on the wrong target my friend ... SA Lotteries do their part to provide funds to the state government, but how the government uses that money and how the government funds the health system with the Feds is out of SA Lotteries control.

But if you want state taxes to go up to cover the amount provided by SA Lotteries then abolish lotteries ... but really, if you don't agree with how it works then don't buy tickets, simple.

Whilst on the subject, a good friend of mine picked up just over $1M in Saturdays x-lotto, she has always been a battler and it couldn't have gone to a more deserved winner.

Cheers, I was pretty chuffed when she told my wife on Sunday, she originally called her family and told them she got 5 numbers, she checked more thoroughly to see that she was wrong.

Well he certaintly took us all to the cleaners!

I know someone who won Xlotto Div 1 a few years back ... he was in a syndicate and won $45K. Now that isn't an amount to sneeze at but wouldn't you be slightly disappointed to have only won $45K? ;)

Why anyone would bother to enter a syndicate is another baffling thing that defies all logic...

The attraction of lotto draws is the chance (albeit very small) of winning a large amount of money but syndicates just reduce your chances of winning large amounts.
The larger a syndicate, the more likely your return will approach the overall expected return, which is losing about 40c for every dollar spent.

For example, entering a $100 million lotto in a 10 person syndicate is basically equivalent to spending the same amount in a $10 million lotto by yourself.
The chance of winning the various prizes is basically exactly the same - the most you can win is $10 million in each case at the same odds.

The extreme case is if everyone in Australia was in a big syndicate, then everyone would lose about 40c for each dollar spent no matter what numbers were drawn. The larger a syndicate, the closer the situation becomes to that scenario.

So syndicates just transform existing lotteries into more boring versions that become more similar to other forms of gambling where
 the chance of winning big are much smaller
 the chance of winning a small amount are much greater
BUT  the chance of you losing overall in the long run become even more certain, as lotto has the lowest expected return to punters out of any form of gambling!!!

But due to the ignorance of the general public, syndicates continue to thrive.

I didn’t enter or watch the broadcast of it, but apparently channel 7 decided to string viewers along for about 20 minutes before they broadcasted the draw. So people tuning in at the expected time for the draw had to watch 20 minutes of channel 7’s BS. Poor form…

Syndicates increase the amount of games that you are in, therefore improving your chances of winning. I'm not ignorant and I go in syndicates with my friends and work colleagues. The numbers that get drawn are not computer generated, they are random numbers that get drawn out, the more tickets you have, the greater the chance of winning.
If one of my syndicates cleaned up on Tuesday night, I'd be as equally happy with just a $3M return as I would with a $53M, it's still enough to set the rest of my life up comfortably.
