Longest losing runs at opposition Ovals

Postby Sojourner » Fri Apr 10, 2009 10:46 am

Hi Spelly,

Glenelg play the Eagles at Woodville tommorow and I am led to believe that they havent had a win there in a number of years? Can you confirm the last win Glenelg had at Woodville and how long it has been since they have broken though?

Whilst we are on the subject, I do believe Norwood have a had a long losing streak at the Ponderosa at Elizabeth,

Do you have any data on the longest droughts clubs have had at opposition ovals?

My dad (a Sturt supporter) took me to Alberton when I was very young. Keith Chessell kicked a goal after the siren to give Sturt victory by a couple of points. My recollection was that was in 1967 and was Sturt's first win at Alberton since WWII.

Spelly, your list has Sturt's losing sequence going to 1965... can you please confirm scores and date of the game I went to - was it 1966 or had Sturt won there the year before?

Incidentally, it was obviously the first time I had been to Alberton but strangely it was the first time my father had ever been down there.

Round 13 1966
Sturt 4.4 4.7 6.15 9.18 (72)
Port 3.1 7.1 7.2 11.4 (70)
Alberton, 15154

Keith Chessell won the game with a mark, and then a goal after the siren. It possibly marked the beginning of Sturt's most successful era.

29 - South at Alberton (1940 to 1966)

20 - South at Alberton (1968 to 1990)

This part interests me Spelly,

What happened in 1967?

If South won in 1967, that means they won one game at Alberton in 50 years?

That's correct Booney, I didn't realise that myself.

In exactly 50 attempts between Round 1 1940 and Round 17 1990, the only game South won was:

Round 11 1967
South 5.3 7.6 12.6 13.7 (85)
Port 1.2 4.7 5.10 10.13 (73)
Alberton, 6894

The next win was:

Round 16 1991
South 4.5 6.6 9.7 11.8 (74)
Port 0.5 2.7 5.8 6.9 (45)
Alberton, 4440

The complete list of wins against Port at Alberton are:
1st Semi 1904
Rd 11 1907
Rd 12 1936
Rd 13 1937
Rd 10 1938
Rd 13 1939
Rd 11 1967
Rd 16 1991
Rd 7 1998
Rd 7 2002
Rd 2 2003
Rd 2 2008

15 - Torrens at Alberton (1954 to 1968)
15 - Torrens at Prospect (1967 to 1982)

13 - Torrens at Glenelg (1970 to 1990)
13 - Torrens at Unley (1964 to 1976)

Finally won one at Alberton, then became the Roosters play thing, with a bit of Bays & blues tossed in for good measure. You wouldn't have ventured far from Thebby as an Eagles fan!

There were no meetings at Alberton between 1897 and 1900, so:
1935: 0-2
1938: 1-0
1964: 0-1
