Well done to West Adelaide on a solid win today, will now guarentee them they will not win their 5th wooden spoon in a row. It was certanly not the most entertaining of games to watch this afternoon, but there were some half decent passages of play scattered throughout the course of the game. No doubt whatsoever that Westies are a side on the improve and Andy Collins is great for that club and the SANFL.
Norwood's season is now surely over in terms of finals aspirations and I honestly can't see how Trevor Hill will be at the helm of the Redlegs in 2010, let alone see out the rest of 2009. Have been super impressed with Northern Bullants recruit Bronik Davies for the Bloods and thought he was in the race for BOG with Sal Hassan today, who kicked a great goal after a diving effort to smother a Norwood kick just on the 50 arc.
Young Daniel Webb from the Bloods is a very exciting talent and sadly for West fans, I don't think they'll see much more of him after this year, unless he gets drafted by an Adelaide based AFL club. Thought Simon Munn was good for the winners today as well and Stephen Bailey won plenty of it again with over 30 possessions. Matthew Lobbe tried hard in ruck all day by himself today and I like the way young Daniel Caire breaks the lines with his attck on the footy and through run and carry.
Fort Caruso showed some real class on a few occassions and is one of the true rovers in this league, really gets front and square well and finishes off in front of goal also. Former skipper David Piasente had some good moments as well and whilst he didn't have his kicking boots on today (as is the case most weeks) Ryan Willits was a great target in the forward lines, just needs to make the most of his opportunities in front of goal.
Not many positives to take out of the game from a Norwood perspective. Their forward line seemed to function okay at times today with Rowe and Vlatko kicking 7 goals between them, but no one else really bobbed up and there were too many quiet games from some of the experienced players. I didn't see any passion from Norwood today and more often than not, their skill excecution was deplorable and not even Division 5 or 6 level.
It didn't help for the Legs losing Bryce Campbell and Dean Terlich before the opening bounce but that is not an excuse for a side clearly showing no faith in themselves, their system, their club and their coach. Trevor Hill surely is not the man to coach the Norwood Football Club to their next premiership and would think he surely is on his last legs, pardon the pun.
Brett Zorzi can again hold his head high and never gave in and like I said above Sam Rowe and Jamie Vlatko provided good targets up front. Skipper James Gallagher had plenty of it as usual and Stephen Doyle probably dominated the hit out count but still doesn't do enough around the grounds. Nick Duigan provided some good run from half back and Nick Jackman did a couple of nice things but Norwood simply had too many passengers which has been the story of their season.
Surely finals are now beyond the Legs and they should now stop allowing underperforming name players to continually keep their spot in the side. I guess the only problem for Norwood is that their reserves are bottom of the ladder so it would be fair to say the depth just isn't there. Great signs ahead for West Adelaide and I certainly think the club and their supporters can look ahead to the next few seasons with great optimism.
