Anything!

Do you believe in Aliens?

Of course! They took me on an intergalactic adventure, placed a brain scanner on my head and shoved a proboscis up my butt to see what expression I'd make.

I voted no.

I think the spark that created life was so difficult to duplicate, it could never hapen again.

We could be the aliens..

We are searching for another planet to populate because we have almost destroyed this one.

We better hurry up guys. Find some ice somewhere... ;)

I think there's bound to be other forms of life somewhere out there but I don't believe in the the whole crop-circle, UFO thing...let's face it why would they want to make contact with us...we're a vile species who thrive on violence of one kind or another. Dismissing the possibility is probably a bit arrogant considering the size of the universe or for the bible (other works of fiction are available) thumpers.

I like the line someone said...probably in a film...about the fact that if there is no other life then it's an awfully big waste of space.

I had a feeling it might have been from Contact...the Jodie Foster film...probably going to have to watch the video tonight to find out

As for not making contact with us...step back and look at the way we've behaved throughout history towards each other and the other life we share our planet with...we are not nice...we kill for greed and fun and we enjoy watching others suffer for our own entertainment. Also our arts ie films and tv make it pretty clear that if we got our hands on aliens we'd treat them like lab rats...tbh I wouldn't be in a hurry to meet us

Why??? They might only be at the same technological stage as us and we're a long, long way from people travelling to other planets within our own solar system let alone other galaxies.

I have "friendly" discussions with some lads at work who wholeheartedly believe in UFO's. I say that with billions of stars in billions of galaxies the odds are there is something out there, but thats hardly proof beyond reasonable doubt. Little green men are possible but its not a fact.

unknown source wrote:funny as poll.. what made you think of asking that??

Half fun, half serious poll. Inspired by a couple of English classes I taught recently in Japan.
We had been talking about Aliens and, to cut a long story short, only one person out of about 10 that I asked claimed to believe in Aliens. Now, Japanese people don't like being outside "the group", as in most Asian cultures, so I guess that claiming to believe in Aliens is one of those things that potentially puts you on the whacky list in some people's eyes. So I thought that perhaps the fear of being looked on as a whacko deterred most of my students from answering in the affirmative.
Australians are a lot more individualistic than Japanese, so I thought it would be a good comparison if I did a poll.
Peresonally I do believe that there is other life out there. As others have stated, there are just too many worlds in too many planetary systems in too many galaxies for there not to be Aliens.
I read in a scientific journal recently that they discovered the basic ingredients for life (water, heat and a couple of other things that I forget) on a moon orbiting Saturn. They claimed volcanic activity on that moon keeps the place pretty warm. If they are right, that makes at least two places within our own solar system capable of spawning life. Then there are all those theories about Mars. With an infinite universe out there I would be very surprised if there was no other planet where intelligent life has developed.

I don't think "aliens" had or have anything to do with the things on TRB's list above - Immanuel Velikovsky's explanation may be more plausible.

I followed the link and skim read the entry. I couldn't find any direct reference to pyramids or Easter Island, but there were a couple of references to a lack of gravity.
I am wondering if these are pieces you have put together yourself or if he mentions a relationship between his ideas and ancient achievements or if I failed to read the article effectively.
Most of what I gathered was that his theories account for the fall of several civilisations, I didn't read anything related to achievements.

In one of his books there is a sub-section about the similarities between ancient Amercian culture and the middle eastern cultures - I think it was in Ages in Chaos from memory.
My comment was based on my general recall from having read all his books back in the 1970s, when Isaac Asimov recommended them, and re-reading them back in 2006.
The reference was meant as a general reference to Velikowsky for those who had never heard of him.

At the time of posting I was thinking more along the line that the similarities of the buildings/monuments referred to in the list were likely to be because of the common events, and the common purpose of predicting future dangerous events, not through shared alien assistance as is the populist UFO fan view.

Incidentally, stimulated by this topic, I did some net searching and came across a blog run by Jerry Pournelle that included a debate about Velikowsky and his views, and Carl Sagan's later attacks on Velikowsky. Pournelle's view is that Velkowsky's grasp of celestial mechanics is inadequate, and his planetary orbital disruption theory is not sound, but that he did demonstrate that cataclysmic events have occurred and shaped history, and he has been vindicated over the long slow evolution theorists who originally attacked him. Sagan seems to have been seen as an unscrupulous career builder attacking a soft target with emotional appeal rather than calm and civilised scientific logic.

Aliens similar to us humans do not exist.

I believe that we have had several chapters of human progress on earth.
Each time we have built up technology and left our mark, only to be destroyed or semi destroyed and start up again.

The current chapter will end with a nuclear disaster.

The new chapter some years off will begin, perhaps with some changes caused by radiation. eg one eyed, 3 legs, wings, or whatever to rebuild
and wonder who built the pyramids, Stonehenge and the Sydney harbour bridge

and assume ALIENS CAME AND DID IT
SO MANY IDIOTS
SO FEW BULLETS

Yetti, for some reason your post above made me think of Harry Harrison's novel West of Eden..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_of_Eden

There have been peaks and troughs, and I recall reading somewhere that the Greeks had sketches of a working steam engine but never built and used it.
The Hittites are alleged to have been producing Iron artifacts as early as the 20th century BC.
The Minoan culture is reputed to have had a sewerage system as efficient as our own in their major cities.

I did read a novel based on the premise that advanced civilisations know they should kept their presence quiet, in case some more advanced and paranoid civilisation throws rocks at them.
Even a small meteorite propelled from far enough away, with say an ion drive, to have reached near light speed on arrival could shatter a planet.
