As Dogwatcher said, the number of teams would make two Magpies too difficult. Perhaps if the AFL encompassed 100's of sides like English soccer it would be okay. There's no way that could happen though.
In other words, two Magpies would be one too many. If Collingwood weren't so powerful and had so many supporters there's a chance they may have to make way for Port. Unfortunately they are very powerful and have tens of thousands of fans, so in a situation like this where it has to be one or the other, I think might makes right. No way that anyone could negotiate the Magpie away from Collingwood in today's footy climate.
If Collingwood were as weak as Fitzroy once were, that would be a different story.
Colours should not be a question of one or the other though. There's room for two black and whites, especially given the proud history of the SANFL and Port's dominance of that history.

Collingwood have had black and white in the vfl/afl for over 100 years. The Power should have gone for something that hadn't be used before or used minimally such as green, orange or pink, they were on the right path going for teal and silver but not long after their birth they started wearing turquoise for some reason and the silver is hardly used.
Having said that Collingwood should have an alternate guernsey for marketing and when they play North Melbourne in a North Melbourne home game.
Stupid part about it is Collingwoods guernsey used to be predominately white but they changed to a predominately black guernsey around the time the Power were born. I remember seeing a match between Collingwood and the Port Magpies with both teams wearing their normal guernseys and I had no problems distinguishing the sides.

I guess that when Collingwood joins the SANFL, we'll wear something other than black and white. Out of respect for the team that was wearing those colours in that competition first.

It's a dead issue for even the most die-hard Port supporter. Has been since 1995.

The 'prison-bars' guernsey is the moot point.

Supporters love it. But...

Club admin has never really gone to war on this because it has never wanted the 'prison-bars' beyond the odd heritage round.

All part of a (failed?) strategy to distance itself from 'traditional' Port Adelaide and win new supporters.

What a brilliant strategy it was.

Who wore the colours first is not the issue here. The issue is that there are 3 clubs wearing Blue and White, Sydney and Freo can wear Red and White, Brisbane, the Crows and now the Gold Coast wear Red, Blue and Yellow, and no one says anything. But try and allow another BLACK AND WHITE and all hell breaks loose! The AFL has been shown to be seriously weak and pathetic about this whole situation.

You make a fine point.
I think part of the argument though is around the guernsey designs of the black and white.
Way too similar.

Also, those club's sharing those colours have been sharing those colours in the same competition for many, many years. They started wearing them in a time when clash guernseys were not heard of and when marketing did not determine the need for colours to be different to create separate identities for football clubs.

I'm sure you can find holes in any answer I put across. My reasonings are not absolute but they bear thinking about.

irrespective of the time you've been around for, clubs should all have a clash/away guernsey. look at the other premier competitions around, EPL, NHL, NFL, NBA.... every team has an away strip they play in.

i'd like to know how much revenue is generated by the selling of away/clash strips too, i don't know why AFL or the clubs don't jump on it.
I am not talking to you for 3 minutes because you punched me in the head and it hurt and that was not okay for you to do
