No, I already knew about his form and attitude, and decided to play safe immediately, but the general public seemed to need longer to find out, or be reminded.
I think it was reasonably possible I would have voted Labor in that election had Beasley stayed leader.
I was thinking about it at the time, as I felt John Howard had gone too far for my comfort.

Neither major party seems to do opposition well - the Libs are struggling now, and Labor struggled and kept changing leaders during the Howard era.
That may be because when any party loses office, after a while all sorts of factions raise their heads, blame each other, and try to wrest control.
I think both Alexander Downer's and Brendan Nelson's elections were purely temporising to give it all time to settle down, and neither was expected to actually lead in an election year.
Perhaps that was also so about Labor's choice of Kym Beasley.

I suspect all those manoeuvres by either party are futile, and that most often the central core of swinging voters just think it is time for a change unless something scares them into being cautious.
In that case all the opposition needs is someone who doesn't scare enough people or put them off in some other way.

PS: I think some Labor leaders also have a dash of the "born to rule" about them, just as some Liberals do - Keating comes to mind.
Australian politics is about power not class - the "class war" is a myth now, even if it were once real, even though my father spoke of "class treachery" after I once admired Bob Menzies speaking skills when I was a child. In many cases I suspect those who want power just choose the party that they hink will serve their purpose, and may not really believe in anything but that.
EPIGENETICS - Lamarck was right!

From Chapman's office:

Deputy Leader of the Opposition Vickie Chapman has welcomed a meeting to resolve ongoing Liberal leadership issues.

“I will be putting my name forward at the meeting to lead the Liberal Parliamentary Party.

“This decision follows conversations I have had with my colleagues and our mutual desire to give our Party the best chance at the next election.

“I am committed to holding the Rann Government to account, winning the election in March 2010, and providing a better future for South Australians” Ms Chapman said.
You're my only friend, and you don't even like me.

MHS "wins" 11-10, obviously not good enough, re-count Wednesday.

What a complete joke the Liberal Party is:
