Crows finals chances

Postby wycbloods » Mon May 18, 2009 5:15 pm

Assuming the crows will need 12 wins to make the finals, which would be 9 of the last 14, i would say that they are no chance whatsoever. With 1xCats, 1xSaints, 2xHawks, 2xBlues, 1xWestern Bulldogs
still to come they would need to win 2 or 3 of these, which i can't see them doing.

Now it will be interesting to see how they approach the rest of the season and whether they are prepared to play plenty of young fellas and get as low as they can to secure as good a draft picks as they can.

Thoughts?

They've missed the boat for this year, but I don't think that will come as a surprise to many.

The crows dont tend to do this. But what playing the younger guys they do. Now is real good time to see what happens with some players. Play Maric up forward for example, bring Gill back in and see what they've got. Try things and see what happens. In my opinon the crows need a high draft pick to ensure they get a gun player.

I must say the crows are in a much better position than say Richmond at the moment.

I know they haven't done it in the past but they have had the luxury of relying on McLeod, Goodwin, Edwards to keep the side competitive, which has worked. They are all nearing the end and the middle tier players will have to either step up or they may find themselves on the outer very quickly. The crows have a very promising bunch of youngsters but it is the middle tier players that have let the crows down and i am sure there will be some people playing SANFL footy that we wouldn't expect in the near future.

Can't win at Tara, thus can't make the eight.

At this stage I think the Crows are very much a genuine contender for AFL finals this season. With North Melb & Sydney to play at AAMI with a pair of wins stretching the streak to 5 in a row and an 8-5 record with 9 games remaining.

If they get to 8-5 they should go very close. Their away record this year is good and they would only need to finish 4-5.

If, if, if ...... who woulda thunk it 3 weeks ago

Im still not convinced they'll make it, but there certainly much more of a chance than I'd given them - I really should learn my lesson, where they've proved me wrong the last few years.

50/50 chance...

I would expect them to be 9-6 or 10-5....
but to come home.. they very well may go 1-6 or 2-5....

it's going to be touch and go.. but I just hope they keep playing the attacking style and the kids...

Well at this stage of the season all you can say is that they are in the mix. Anything could happen between now and finals time.

I think it will be a hard ask for them to make the finals and i think the next month will show whether they will get there or not.

Yeah i cant believe people in the media are jumping on us to make the 4 and even Gary Lyon says we are premiership threats. We have played 4 games of good footy and shown what we can play attacking footy with some promising youngsters, but premiership threat??? your kidding. This young group will have bad days and if little things go wrong the game plan can fall flat.

Im just looking for the young guys to improve and refine the game plan so when they are bigger, stronger and experienced they can have a fair dinkum crack

In saying that hey i hope we make the finals have a crack and you never know... gotta be in it ti win it!!!!!!!!!!

I reckon the next month will determine whether or not the Crows make the 8, assuming that goes well the last month will determine whether they make top 4. I expect them to finish bottom half of the 8 which will be a similar result to last year but with the club much further in its development to being a real threat again IMO.

Early in the year when we were getting beaten by quality sides like St Kilda, Geelong and the Bulldogs, while experiencing the growing pains that come with a different game plan, Craigy wasn't "the man to take this club forward" and the sky was falling. Now with a streak of wins and improving execution, hesitation with the footy has started to disappear and we are apparently poised to repeat the heroics of 1997 if you listen to Garry Lyon. The fact is the signs were there when we were struggling against the Saints and co. just as they are now that we've put a few wins on the board; Craigy was and is a good coach who evidently has a clear vision for this club and the talent is there to give the realisation of that vision a serious shake.

In light of everything that has happened I'm sticking to my pre season prediction of 5th, so yeah, finals. Started to think we might be more in the 7th-9th range given we went for a heavier blend of youth than expected, but things have managed to even out at the halfway mark. Another first week finals exit wouldn't be a total shock but our forward structure is more dangerous this year than it has been for at least a couple, and we are packing more flair. I reckon we'll make the semi finals, but all this talk of us having improved enough to match it with Geelong at the business end of the season is a good 12 months premature imo; it's the sort of thing I expected to be hearing on the run into the 2010 finals series.

=D> =D> =D>

I maintain our best game for the year we have played was v Geelong (even despite the good 4 wins we have had)...
Geelong were up for a G Ablett milestone game and we were competitive all night (barring 5 mins in the 2nd qtr and 10 mins in the last qtr)....
We played quick, attacking footy and had more inside 50's and it was really just the brilliance of a couple of blokes for Geelong that helped them win... as Mike Sheahan said - best 8 goal loss he's ever seen and I agree...

We went into our shell against Melb and Port and played 2 "tempo" footy games and everyone forgot about the first month of good attacking footy we played against 3 teams that are currently in the top 4 + Freo...

The past 6 weeks have been good (the Kangas game was conditions and D Laidley based defensive) and it's good to see us playing with some attacking flair and getting it into the forward line quickly and with some purpose...

I'd think they'd make the 8, just. You'd think they'd win the next 3, Syd, Rich, Freo which would give them 10 wins. I think you'll need 13 wins this year for the top 8, especially Adelaide as their % isn't so good, so then they'd need 2-3 from their last 7 of the year with Port, Coll, WC and Carlton all being possible/likely wins. 8)
