I think the Western Bulldogs and St.Kilda in recent years (separate years) had excellent starts but dropped right off.

Bulldogs last year and St Kilda went 10-0 in 2004 and failed to make the Grand Final. Hawthorn also went 8-0 in 2001 I think it was before they got knocked out in the prelim by the Bombers. I remember one year the Cats went 5-0 and then proceeded to lose the next nine! Oh the joys of the Gary Ayres era.
