I'm even more unsure about the Eagles being the real deal now.

I guess they must have had 8 players out again...
Or was it the umpiring? :-({|=
Ot the lack of beer tents? ;)

Are the Eagles the Real Deal? :-?

yeah 8 players out again :D
might be the beer tents aswell. Interesting year seen as most teams can beat each other on the day and it seems only centrals are the od one out winning just about everything

That was deplorable. I've seen some pretty bad games of footy, but I don't think I've seen much worse than that. There were two main highlights:

1) Salim Hassan almost taking mark of the century flying on top of the pack and not quite being able to take the grab.
2) Jarred Allmond's grid iron throw in the 3rd quarter when someone in the crowd handed him back the ball after a behind and he threw it back to the full back for a kick in. It was a really good throw.

The difference in the end was probably a few of the better West players class shone through - players like Ezard and Ferguson. West will be happy with the win, as they should be, but I bet they've played a lot better footy than that over the last few years and been easily beaten. At the end of the day they got the two points and that is what matters.

I really can't name an Eagles player who had a good game. There are some front runners in the side who only play well when they are brought into the game by others. There are a number of players who should be struggling to be good enough for reserves football, let alone league selection. They were flying two weeks ago. They simply have not put a good enough side on the park the last two weeks and there have been players capable playing reserves. If these players are playing reserves because they haven't put in enough to warrant league selection or have an attitude problem then that is a problem in itself. Either way, the coach and selection panel have a lot to answer for.

A North supporter mentioned after the Eagles win at Prospect a couple of weeks ago that Fuller cut strips off the players after the game. Either Fuller could see the writing on the wall back then or that incident has had a negative impact on the team. The last two weeks have been nothing short of disgraceful.

Great to see West win another one. Well done! Maybe Norwood will be competing with the imploded eagles for the 5th spot or even Westies??

The skill level of WA today was below what ive seen this year
However the tenacity , spirit, 2nd efforts was very good
EG simply cant get thier best team on the park at this stage

2 incidents really did turn thIS game
WA 9-9
EG 9-5
EG had just scored the last 1-1 in the game just b4 3/4 time
Then we saw one of the most regrettable incidents seen in SANFL footy
Robert Spearley was reported
Wests Fisher[I think he was the player] leapt skywrds to almost take a spectacular mark
He landed jumped up and regained possession of the ball
He was tackled by Robert Spearley who completed the tackle by executing a spear tackle
Shirley drove Fishers 'temple' into the ground
Fisher was knocked out and took no further part in the game
It was a crude tackle and Spearley must be suspended for at least 3-4 weeks
In Spearleys defence is this is out of character for him, but he would be regretting his action
The last few minutes of the qtr was frenetic, WA finished the qtr with 2 stretchers injuries
3/4 tIME
WA 9-10
EG 9-6
Robert Spearley reported

Into the last qtr we saw another controversial incident
Deep in the WA forward pocket
2 EG players v Steven MORRIS
If Cupido is the Rolls Royce of the team Steven is the MOrris of the team
He tackled the first EG player who handballed the ball to his team mate
Morris then swivelled around and gave out the most punishing shirtfront you would see in footy
He KOed the EG player as both players collided
EG recieved a free kick
I am norMALly outspken about shirtfronts etc
But this was a legitimate fair and square one delivered by Morris

WA were sparked
In the past they would sit on a lead and defend
But after those incidents they attacked the footy very very hard
They wanted to win
They did win

WA 12-15
EG 10-7

WA remain undefeated at Broad oval in 2009 !

EG won the centre breaks
WA just won the stoppages
The result was a true reflection of the game

PS
Spearley was given a hostile send off by irate WA supporters near the players race at the end of the game

Mal that was a fantastic bit of play by young Morris and really showed Westies committment at both the ball and the man. No way was it a free kick to the Eagles, just fantastic desperation.
I think had westies kicked straight in the second half (wind was quite tricky), the margin would have been closer to 8 goals.

MORRIS is a beauty
Old fashioned strong player
Agree that shirtfront was legal
Both players appeared to be going to a neutral ball
The ball was between them
They both collided together

It was without doubt the play of the day by Morris to take on the 2 players and hold them up

BRODLACH
Bayman and I thought WA skill level V NW/GL games was better than today
Today they made up for it will a great will to win
Thay kept at it and tried to win this game in the last qtr, rather then get numbers back

Fuller continues to astound with his extremely poor team selections. Every week we see his little boys getting a game even though some of them would struggle at A3 level. It's time to go Fuller and take hicks daniel and co with you.

Mal I actually didnt think the skill level was too bad considering the wind was a tricky one....expect for the 7 times westies decided to kick into the man on the mark

I completely agree that the Eagle's highlight of the day was Allmond's 25m gridiron throw in the 3rd quarter.

For the majority of the last 2 weeks, pressure on the opposition has been poor, letting players run free too easily. It also seems that some players are lacking confidence that was there earlier in the season.

The lack of depth has also been exposed following injuries over the last month. It seems our best team is a top 3 contender but lose a few players and the quality falls away quickly - sure these players are young and will hopefully improve over time, but at the moment appear to be a little lost at league level and are not sighted for large portions of the game. We can probably handle 2-3 of these players in the team at any time doing their little bit here and there, but at the moment there are too many not doing enough.

Whilst our best team might be a top 3 contender, any team will most likely have injuries at any point in time so will rarely have their best team on the field - sometimes its not how good your best 21 players are, but how good players 22-30 are.

There appeared to also be some tired bodies so the week off looks like it has come at the right time.

West played with spirit, passion and heart.

They played with run, a clear pattern and took risks.

They made lots of mistakes.

It was great to watch and was a great spectacle for the crowd.

Great stuff Bloods!

You've got it wrong... we were told last week... Torrens just beat themselves, it wasn't West who beat them, just like it wasn't Sturt who beat them by 10 goals last week... poor ol'Torrens!

We should all weep for them... so unlucky!

Congratulations to West Adelaide, not just on winning the match today but showing their supporters that their faith in Andy Collins throughout last season was the right thing to do. Clearly its to early to be talking about the steps forward that Westies have taken, yet I will say that their side looks much better than the side they had last season, I do think that getting Salim Hassan back to Westies was a stunning piece of good luck as he clearly is begining to hit his old form again and is a high standard SANFL player which Westies needed to bolster their side.

I do hope that the administration of the SAFC is watching what is happening at West Adelaide and making good use of the opportunity to look through the window at how things can really be "rebuilt" at an SANFL side.....
