So BJ, how did the game pan out? By the looks of it it went down to the wire, would have loved to have been there to watch it.

Great weekend of GSFL footy by the looks of the scores. 3 games decided by less than a goal!

P32 our game was a tight game for the whole day. Victor jumped us at the start and probably should've been further in front at qtr time. The 2nd quarter was our best, we put on about 6 goals to hold a 2-3 goal lead at the half. 3rd qtr was victors again, couple of points in it going into the last.

We kicked away early in the last to be about 2 goal up, Victor kicked the next 3 then we managed to snare a late goal and a couple of points to get up in the end.

Matt Hodge was outstanding! Brilliant game, beautiful user of the ball! Luke and Dale Ellis were very good, our main man on here TW was good along with the rest of the Victor side.

For us Matty Thomas was fantastic, controlled CHF all day taking about 20 marks!

Its a wide open race for the flag this year no doubt about it!

The next 5 matches will tell us all a lot more about the Magpies. Facing Victor, Willunga and Creeks respectively in the next 3 matches will be a difficult task for the young pies. If they were to lose all 3, as most would predict even after a 4-0 start, the ability to stay positive and on their game will be a real key and they would then need to keep it all together to get over McLaren and the Bays in rounds 8 and 9.

It was a good game, very fast and physical and played in great spirit with both sides 100% committed to the ball and wanting the win hopefully next time we get the win!! I also think Steel was great in the ruck for you guys BJ.
Well done to Willunga the bond they have among the group showed on sat and got them over the line in a close contest hopefully as the season goes on Victor can continue bonding together and continue to improve.

Well done to the pies on 4 straight, I believe I may have heard the saying "4 and 0 baby" a few times sat night LF??
Also the big fella Chief went down with a dislocated knee cap hopefully he is not out for too long!!

C'mon TW, I think what I said Saturday night was influenced heavily by tequilla slushies. Why were you with us anyway? Shouldnt you have been at a VHFC function? Chief seems to be a bit better than first expected but the knee cap was definately 'popped' out beacuse I was right next to him. It was amazing how it put itself back in. Hopefully with no ligament damage he will be back soon.

Also a few quotes based around some from Remember the Titans were flying around saturday night as the boys enjoyed another win. "hell of a game you boys played today, best defence in 20 years" "th-tha-thankyou officer" very fun night!!! But now is a new week and a new game to concentrate on, Victor at home will be match of the round and should be another closely fought match. While the maggies are still winning, i think it is pretty hard to pick against them, they are on a roll and will take some stopping. GPE by 2 goals.

Big chief will hopefully be back sooner rather than later. The knee put itself bck in quickly after dislocating and we are hopeful it has done that without doing too much damage.

Went down to Victor and watched a very good game.
The crowd was on the smallish side, a slight breeze to the Northern end, nice and sunny, with plenty of parking around the oval at the start of the game. Thomas was terrific for Willunga.
It was a real battle of the midfields. Steele totally dominated and after giving big Jagan Hames a corky flogged Joraslafsky, yet Victor had the best of the clearances in the first quarter. When Victor cleared from the middle they looked unstoppable. Horsfall matched up on Dale Ellis and Baxter picked up Luke Ellis (or the other way round).
Victor opened up their forward lines with only Pittman and Ellis in the forward Fifty. Levis joined them in the second quarter.
It looked as if Haskett picked up the 2 rotating onballers,Ellis and Bell and continually ran off them so they couldn't get a rest on the flank. Not a bad move.
Willunga tended to go wide to the Clubroom side and kicked four goals from close to the boundary early in the second quarter.

Not sure if hams is 100% fit although he moved OK, as he did very little leading. Guitink did most of the leading.
For Willunga Portlock was quiet for him, Baxter servicable but as a team were just a bit better.
Victors recruits all good, but their bottom 5 a bit below par.
I did like the look of Victors young curly headed defender (maybe no who gave a bit of run and drive from defence, and number 1 (Weetra I think). Fox Ok and Brown just starting to show his age.
As Bj said Hodge was a star, with so much time and uses the ball well.
Bit of a write up about Sam basham a couple of weeks back on the forum. Showed a bit but still a way to go

Victor is the real deal, great down the middle and the best midfield in the comp.THEY WILL NOT GO TOP UNLESS THEY GET ANOTHER QUALITY RUCKMAN TO HELP THE OLD WARHORSE JAGAN

Yeah we will have a crack Saturday against the Roos, but surely after their effort on Saturday against Willunga they will be and deserve to be favourites. This will be the week where we will see the gap between Willunga, VH and the rest. TW I will not be speaking to you this week, but if you organise our friday night footy "special guests" I am in.

The best thing about being challenged is we now know what level we need to play at. I have no doubt we can play better football than we did on Saturday. Our skill efficiency would have been down. Our workrate was down and also our intensity at the ball. Victor have the weapons to beat anybody and they showed Saturday they will be their come september.

Goolwa v Victor Harbor will be fantastic this week. Ewer v Hodge will be brilliant with 2 ex Morphies boys goin head to head.

Goolwas tall forward line will stretch Victors defence! Exciting times for Magpies (god i hate magpies)

I believe a lot of games throughout the year between the top 5 sides will come down to who is the better team on the day. Come finals the experience of Willunga and Creeks will help a lot but until then i think it is shaping up as a very exciting season.

i'd have to agree there kick n catch.. myponga battled hard all day.. i think it was actually 12 goals in the last quarter for the hawks which goes to show that the mudlarks did well in the first 3 quarters.

12 goals.....well full credit to them too golding going into the ruck and feast up forward worked wonders and had far too many hard running onballers/wingmen. myponga playing a more direct quick brand of football this week which shows that they may not be as bad as people think although still a long way to go for the boys.

Yep, the Mudlarks were very good for the first 3 quarters on Saturday. I think they were only about 5-6 goals behind at 3 quarter time. A combination of the Creek lifting and the Muddies dropping intensity caused a bit of a blowout in the last, but Myponga can take a lot of positives out of the game.

My observations of the Creek were that for the first 3 quarters things were a bit disjointed carrying on from the Strath game, they weren't really playing like a team still. Importantly though in the last quarter you could see it coming together, it was like someone flicked a switch and they were all on the same page. Very good to see and I'm sure this will really improve over the coming weeks.

Also - I was worried about the possible state of Myponga oval after the rain Friday but it was an absolute treat, compliments to whoever looks after it!

bays finally got on the board on sat with a win over yank, was a good game with bays leading all game, think we were 4 goals up at quarter time but let them back into the game in the last when we should have burried them. Positives to come out of the game besides the win was the form of young tom hopper and also his even younger brother will hooper, some very strong signs for years to come. Defence was excellent again and coach mitchell played a good game in foward pocket.

b grade was terrible but a good sign was 5 new players, although not fit as havent trained yet, the b grade had no senior colts for the first time in years and once these blokes get out on the track they will continue to give the bays a bit of depth.

sounds like victor have responded to the hype with a positive result on the wekend, although not a win agaisnt willunga will give them some confidence going into september. Talking to a victor local who is always in the g though his question to the club is will they go broke after this year like they did in the 90's? i am not familiar with what happened in the 90's with the cash? is anyone else?

Well done to Yank B-grade, a thouroughly deserved win! They have been hammered by teams for years and the blokes have stuck together to enjoy their footy and have now dished out a belting of their own! Some quality players in the Yank reserves and they will take it up to more fancied opponents throughout the year!

Is there an issue regarding depth with VH's assault on the 2009 flag?
Willunga had more than double the amount of scoring shots in the Reserves.

VH v Willunga:
Hodge outstanding, his class depicted perfectly with his conversions in front of goal.
Fox adds an element of physicality and class to their forward line.
Huge task for Horsfall to take on Ellis, especially after considerable time out of the game.
Haskett & Portlock only served up moderate performances, after it was much publicised how crucial their influence would be.

Goolwa v Compass:
Goolwa limped over the line, could have made an emphatic statement to their rivals. In retrospect, it was an away win and was important to ensure the winning feeling was instilled, as they prepare for the huge clash with their cross-town adversaries.
The trials and tribulations of Leigh Hirst continued, found some old form to boot 3 vital goals but this was then offset by a concerning knee injury. Out for a month. Perhaps paves the way for young Yeomans, who seems out of favour as he dished up a lacklustre performance in the South reserves.

Round 4 was the biggest tests to date for VH & Goolwa, and they both stood up. The renewed interest in the comp this year has been validated. Where do LC sit? Jury still out on them, but you would think the Demons have their work cut out to win another flag.
