John Platten is the best rover in the history of Australian football, not just SANFL.

Big call - you might get an arguement from the likes of Barry Cable and Bob Skilton for starters!

Hodgy

And he's a favourite of mine cause he was our one decent player through the 90s - Chiggy
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I know I'd get an argument but I'd back Platten's record against Cable and Skilton... If you had a points system for games played, total possessions, goals kicked, medals won and premierships won I'm sure Platten would come out on top.

I made the point earlier that Platten is the best small man I ever saw play the game and I'll stand by that. I saw a lot of Cable, and although I may not have seen Skiolton at his peak, I was watching footy when he won his third Brownlow.

When Platten was in the SANFL he used to everything. Rove from the centre, boot plenty of goals, take big marks, he was an amazing footballer. When he went to Hawthorn he had to limit himself in some ways, but he excelled in others.

He wasn't allowed to fly for marks as Hawthorn's big man strength didn't require him to do so, and although Allan Jeans didn't want him risking life and limb clashing with larger opponents, he continued to do so with great success. Let's just say that once Jeans saw what Platten could do, a healthy compromise was reached :)

Cable and Skilton were wonderful players, but I'd still have Platten ahead on an all-round basis. Plus, I also saw more of Platten so I have more memories of his absolute brilliant best. Platten would be worth a fortune on today's market.

I think we agree AH. And we're not knocking the other two blokes. All three were champions.

Was Bradley a rover at Port Adelaide? I know he did some at Carlton but I thought he played as a centreman/wingman at Port.

Here are a few of my favourite Norwood rovers (not including Von Bertouch & Nunan):
Robert Oatey
Haydn Bunton
Keith Thomas

Cable also has the 4 WAFL premierships (3 at Perth, 1 at East Perth as captain coach) and 2 VFL premierships at North Melbourne. He would be close to AFL Legend status, even by the biased AFL Hall of Fame judging.

Pretty much.

Mainly as a centreman.

Kinnear, Bradley, Anderson was the regular centreline between 83 - 85...
