Telstra broadband (land line) is by NO means the best.
I love 'Food and Stuff'. It's where I buy all of my food. And most of my stuff.

For christ sake noone please listen to Dogger, Telstra are definately not the best.
I work in IT and work with a lot of IT gurus who know their stuff and Telstra would probably be the last ISP they'd go with.
But I'd recommend you do your research, a great starting point is the whirlpool site:

http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/

I doubt I'd look elsewhere from Internode or Adam if possible when all things are considered.

Adam and Internode are the 2 largest here in Adelaide.

You'll find people go with Tel$tra because they are either too lazy, or too technologically dumb to go with someone else.

Its only a bit harsh because some people get it because they like to package everything up with the one provider (phones, mobiles, internet, etc) where they get a discount for.
Personally I'd want a 99% discount before even considering them though. ;)

If I wanted a pot plant for home, wasn't overly concerned of the quality, just something to fill a space... then I might go to Big W, or KMart.

If I wanted something good, I would go to a nursery.

Point being, for Internet access, go to a place who sells, primarily, Internet access.
Not a phone company.

You guys aren't being very helpful here TBH. I get that a chef wouldn't buy their fruit & veg from Coles and use it in their restaurant. But I'm not a chef in a restaurant! For home cooking, Coles F&V is perfectly fine.

Help me understand what I am missing out on:

- we are with Telstra BigPond
- ADSL 2 with a home wireless network
- use the net for browing web-sites 3-4 hours per day between 2 of us / very minimal downloading or uploading
- we don't watch movies over the net or anything like that
- costs $35 per month for 12 GB after allowing for a $20 pm discount + free SMS and cheaper landline rates from bundling services

Hopefully this helps the other basic internet users out there, like me. My beef with Telstra was their pricing and the fact that I only got the discount when I rang to complain and threaten to go elsewhere. But now I have it, it's a non-issue (until next time the contract expires).
In between signatures .....

Using that philosophy you could keep a Falcon that uses more petrol, costs more to keep when you could get a Ferrari for less price which is cheaper to run and more reliable.
Also similarly to a car you might buy a Commodore and have one of the 1% that work OK when you could buy a Falcon and have a 50% rate but not notice anything yourself because you've been lucky.
My dialup connection was fine, doesn't mean I wasn't willing to find something that was better.
There's too many things to go into, the most obvious being they count uploads as download, if you are on a 15gb plan with Telstra you could probably get away with a 5gb plan with any other company, its nothing short of criminal in my mind.
I know my old man went through over a 1gb a month with Telstra and was lucky to push the 300mb limit with all other companies.
Some people are willing to put up with Telstras downfall so they can bundle other things with it mind you if you separated landlines, mobiles, internet with other companies you'd probably still be better off but people get wooed by percentages off and what they've been used to.
Best thing to do scour this place if you're interested, people in the know will give you advice on SAFooty but if you're really interested you need to do the homework yourself.
http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/
Have a look at the forums too, I did a quick browse and noticed that most posts on the Bigpond part of the forum were complaints, perhaps compare the number of complaints from one forum to another.

I can actually remember about 10 years ago when Telstra were reknowned as the best but at that time they were the most expensive, I think they have a virtual monopoly at that stage though.

Anyway, end of rant, do the study yourself, if you just browse web sites you'd be comfortable on a 1gb plan with anyone ELSe rather than Telstra where you'd probably need a 5gb plan with Telstra.

What you get used to and what you're happy with all plays a degree though, I must admit Ive enjoyed my excellent service with Internode, best company Ive ever been with out of about 5 (including Telstra) but at the moment I could probably get a better deal with Adam who along with Internode are reknown as the 2 firms to be with but Im too lazy at this stage to change. ;)

As i said, we are currently with Telstra, but we are exceeding the downloads way to quickly and the computer is becoming quite slow.

We are going to be changing to another company soon, what would you guys recommend?
