Peter Brock The Legend

Postby Wedgie » Sat Sep 09, 2006 1:54 am

I apologise for starting another thread on the death of Peter Brock but I've had time to think about it and just wanted to put my thoughts down about the great man.
Despite being a Ford fan now the only reason I'm an avid fan of V8 Supercars is because of the great man Peter Brock.
None of my parents, relatives or friends were into motor racing but for some reason in the late 70s and early 80s I used to sit down and watch Bathurst from 7am till the finish about 5pm every year, it used to captivate me.
My family and friends couldn't understand why all I wanted to do was get a HRT Dealer Team jacket and I think there's a photo in my parents photo album of me going to my first North game by myself in the early 80s with my HRT jacket on.
In the late 70s/ early 80s I always arose early despite knowing the main event didn't start till about 9am and the only reason I watched was to see how Brocky did.
Who could forget any of his 9 wins on the mountain?
When he was in a little Torana against those huge Falcons?
When the Mazda RX7s tried to take him on?
When his car broke down and he jumped in his teams other car despite it being miles behind yet going on to win?
Peter Perfect always mesmorized me.
He was an amazing sportsman and the only reason I tuned in every year was to barrack for Brocky.
I didn't want another Holden winning, I didn't want a Mazda or a Ford winning, the only reason I tuned in was to see Brocky win and every win was always special and a priviledge to watch.
Despite still loving car racing nothing beats those days of when Brocky used to win against the odds.

I could think of no more fitting tribute than AVESCO perhaps allowing Mark Skaife to put the "05" on the side of his car this Bathurst despite there probably being issues with that as Mark Winterbottom already has no 5 on his Falcon and seeing Skaifey win Bathurst.
Ive never been a fan of Skaife as most would know but I think nothing would be better than him in an "05" car getting up this year.

Vale Peter Brock, you will be missed.

I'll end this post with the official announcement from the V8 Supercars chairman:

Tony Cochrane, Chairman, V8 Supercars Australia: “Our immediate thoughts are with his family, his children and everybody associated with Peter. It’s a huge loss for V8 Supercars, it’s a huge loss for Australian motor sport and it’s a massive loss for sport in this country.

“Peter gave up so much of his time for children, for charities - to helping others. He was a great role model for so many young athletes not just in motor sport but in sport generally. I hope everybody remembers Peter for all those great things he contributed.

“Peter has always been there. Being at Mount Panorama in four weeks time without Peter Brock ducking and weaving around the pit buildings just won’t be the same.

“He was a great Australian, the sort of bloke that has made this country the fantastic place it is. We can ill-afford to lose the likes of a person of that breed.

“You just can’t simply replace a person like that.”

Wayne Cattach, Chief Executive Officer, V8 Supercars Australia: "He was thought of as nearly indestructible and we've lost two people this week that we have perceived as indestructible, doing what they love doing. It’s a sense of loss, a sense of shock and a sense of grief for his family.

"V8 Supercars was built on the foundation of people of the likes of Peter Brock, Dick Johnson and Allan Moffat - they were household names before V8 Supercars Australia was even invented.

“They set the template for the future. They contributed as competitors and later as role models. I know Peter in particular played a mentoring role for drivers such as Mark Skaife and Craig Lowndes and his unique quality was that he was at one with the fans.

“You would see him many hours after the other drivers had departed signing autographs patiently with a special message for every fan. There will be a great sense of grieving rising out of this news.

"The most befitting place for a tribute is Bathurst. He forged his name in motor sport on that mountain, I think the fans will come to expect something special and we will provide that. We will obviously give special thought to how we are going to do that and we will take into account the families’ wishes.”

Good post Wedgie, I have tears rolling down my face again.
Brocky was the only reason I went to Bathurst a few years ago (96?) same as Senna was the reason I followed F1 (never sen another race since San Marino(?).
Thank you Peter Perfect for the memories. VALE The King of the Mountain
_Bathurst this year will be a very somber affair and hopefully Holdens make a fitting trifcta (Prehaps ex-codrivers Jim Richards & Larry Perkins to race in the 05 together)

They should never allow that SCUM skaife to use the 05. I would rather see Jim Richards and Larry Perkins with the 05 before that SCUM. I hate skaife the guy is a bigger tool than Cornsey. Wedgie it was a great piece written by you but i was never a Brocky fan as good as a driver that he was i always prefered Dick Johnson or anyone in a Ford. I feel that having Skaife have the 05 even though it is in honour of Peter is wrong they should use Garth Tander or someone else in a holden (not the Kelly boys either.)

Scum? Whats he done to be called scum?

I think Jim Richards and Ryan Briscoe should have the 05 on their car, seeing that Jim won how ever many Bathursts with Peter.

Strawb, I too am not a Skaife fan but Skaifey and Brocky were very close, it was very moving hearing Skaife talk about Brocky on 5AA on Friday.
I think times like these are times to put aside previous feelings for Skaife and others.

Which would be the reason you dont like Skaife and refer to him as scum, really not the right time or place for it, grow up.
There is no current V8 Supercar driver that was closer to Brock than Skaifey.

05 was last run @ Bathurst in 2004, Jason Plato teamed up with Peter Brock, only to have the car damage early in the race while Jason was in the car, and then have Cleland and Jones's Ozemail Falcon flip over using the 05 HRT Commodore as a ramp.
pretty amazing inccident.
I think it would be fitting for the 05 to be run on Skaife's car @ Bathurst this year, and then have the number retired until maybe James Brock gets a drive in the Supercars.

Dont have a problem with James Brock using the number if he wants to. but with Skaife using it this year well thats a different story. The competitors left in the WA event have stuck Brocky 05 stickers on their cars and perhaps the whole V8 supercar field should consider running somthing similar

I put together a bit of a pictorial history of Brocky on the Roost earlier, and thought I'd put it up here as well.
I hope I've gone some way in showing his versatlity in these pic's, because he was much more than just a great touring car driver, and for a brief period did drive for a number of other manufacturers as well.

Its amazing looking at the photos on the brock05.com website, looking at the huge variety of different cars he drove, from the Aussie Touring Cars, Le Mans cars, 4WDs, muscle cars, British Touring cars, 2L touring cars, and he was competitive/dominant in all of them. Also driving Holdens, Fords, BMWs, and many other manufacturers cars. A true motorsport legend.

I have read what i wrote and i am going to stand by my opinion on what i have said. But i am going to apologise to anyone in which i have offended with my point of opinion. I know it wasn't the time or place but i still feel the same way. I thought that the 05 number was retired in honour of Peter after the 2004 race. As people can tell i am not a Mark Skaife fan and i never will be. I will admit that HRT/HDT have been great teams in the past and their dominance has been extraordinary in V8 racing. I saw the special on Peter and how close he and Mark was but i still feel that Mark shouldn't be allowed that number. I also feel that no-one else except Peter's son should be allowed the 05 number because it is special it is like the Bulls offering the number 23 to anyone else other than Micheal Jordan or his children. The same can be said for the Boston Celtic's I didn't see them offering the number 35 to anyone after Reggie Lewis died. So That is why I feel this way about the 05. I said I wouldn't mind seeing a few different Holden drivers other than Skaife to use the number but after seeing all the pictures that have been posted and also after watching the special my opinion has changed to say no-one should we allowed the number Retire it like the Celtic's did after Reggie Lewis died and keep it that way. I will admit I was hasty in venting my views and like a moron and a tool I didn't think it through like i have recently. I felt that i should write this not because of people telling me what they think of me but after reading what I wrote I will admit i was acting like a tool.
So to all whom have been offened by me I am sorry.

:( Why do all Ford followers hate SKAIFE anyway !
Is it cause he is the most successful driver ever, or just jealously comming out again!
Bye BROCKY !, you will always be rembered by everyone, including FORD fans !!!!!
