Buckley, easily. Sheedy's time is past, as shown in his final 3 years at Essendon. He clearly had lost touch with the requirements of coaches in the modern era, and left Essendon with a shocking list.

Agree

Good post on Buckley and Richmond.

James Hird wouldn't WANT to coach. Buckley would.

In His book and on the couch, he has said at the mo' he has other intreset and doesn't really want to coach. Buckley at the Port magpies well we can only hope no mercy, I think he will make a good head coach

I have no doubt in my mind Buckley will be a top coach. I don't think I've seen a player so meticulous in his approach, and I have a feeling he would approach coaching in the same manner.

Whereas "Coaches" such as Wallace has been distracted by other things such as media involvement, etc, Buckley would leave no stone unturned to be as good a coach as he can possibly be.
Agreed 100%. Buckley would be my #1 choice to take over.

Like CP said seriously knows his stuff.

Will be a very good coach IMO.

Watson, K.B, Baldock,t. Shaw, Knights. All Champion players knew their stuff not too great coaches. Just cause you know ur stuff on the T.V and in the papers doesn't mean you will be able to tell the players how to do it.

Watson, Shaw and KB know their stuff on the TV and Radio? I think they are pretty ordinary to be honest.

We wont know until he coaches but i think you will find he will be a very good coach. Some people are born with the sort of leadership skills that are required to coach and i think Buckley will end up being one of them.

Only time will tell i guess.

For every example you give of a champion player who failed as a coach, you could find those that also succeeded ... Matthews, Blight, Walls, Barrassi etc.

You can also find a lot of workmanlike players, who succeeded as coach (ala Malthouse, Pagan, Sheedy etc).

At the end of the day we wont know until he gives it a go, but I think he has the drive, focus and knowledge to succeed.

Personally feel glad that he decided to leave Brisbane for the supposed better football environment of Collingwood and in turn missed out on 3 and possibly 4 AFL flags. Sucked in Buckley, you should have let the cards fall.

I think Buckley would be a good coach in that he appears to be a serious and committed person who knows his stuff.
Whether players with less dedication to success, who prefer a more relaxed approach to training and more partying, would be happy being coached by him is another issue, as disruptive rebellion could occur.
He would need to be coaching somewhere where discipline and achievement is part of the culture, and he would be backed by the administration.
