I never knew

Postby whufc » Thu Mar 26, 2009 9:27 am

When a team wins the Thomas Syemour Hill trophy they obviously get a little shield on the cup with the team name and year won..............before Port Power was in the AFL any premiership won by Port had Port Adelaide written on their shield. BUT since Port Power have entered the AFL for every Port premiership won since their inclusion now says Port Adelaide Magpies.

Yep, Port Adelaide Magpies were premiers in 1998 & 1999, so that's what they would have envgraved on the trophy. No mystery there.

So does that mean the deceased "Port Adelaide" won many premierships, but the new "Port Adelaide Magpies" have 2 SANFL premierships, and the new "Power" 1 AFL one??
[Both of them being scions of the old "Port Adelaide", but not actually the same organisation.]

I don't want to get into an argument over this because it pretty much depends on who you ask. However, at the time (1996) it was announced that the Port Adelaide football club, previously having won 34 flags in the SANFL with a home base at Alberton Oval, were now playing in the AFL. The Administration went with to set up and run the AFL club. It was also known that the AFL wanted a club with a strong tradition to join the AFL.

A club named Port Adelaide Magpies were to play in the SANFL in their place, different Administration, new name, and in the beginning different training facilities.

Therefore, I have always considered that "Port Adelaide" have won 1 AFL flag and 34 SANFL flags, and therefore the Port Adelaide Magpies (1997-2008) have won 2 flags.

That is how is was in 1996, but so many different people have changed the story to suit themselves over the year I don't know who to believe any more. If you listen to some Port fans they'll tell you Port Adelaide in the AFL have won 1 AFL flag and 34 SANFL flags, whereas Port Adelade in the SANFL have won 36 flags. This means between them they've won .... 71 flags???? :?

I wonder, what will they do with the trophy once it runs out of space for badges?

Will they get a new trophy and leave the old trophy to the premiers once the last space is taken, or take the base off and put the cup on top of a new base?

You're wrong, I too used to have that same viewpoint (as that viewpoint suited me as you mentioned, I used to upset my Port mate by telling my SANFL club hasd won more SANFL flags than his SANFL club and my VFL/AFL club had won more VFL/AFL premierships than his club, I won all round) but a bit of digging prooved I was wrong and I was happy to admit it.
The club that was in the SANFL changed their name from the PAFC to the PAMFC, players that played for the Magpies in 1996 did not have to sign new contracts for 1997 as it was the same club.
Players that played with the PAFC in 1996 and joined the Power in 1997 were required to sign new contracts as it was a completely new club.
After the PAFC changed their name to the PAMFC the new entity adopted the now vacant PAFC name.
As a business the PAFC had to register a change of name to PAMFC and the Power had to register a completely new entity.
Its quite simple.
The club in the SANFL changed their name but are the same entity that's been around for over 100 years and won many premierships, the club in the AFL was a brand newy, it had to sign every player to brand new contracts in the mid 90s being a brand new club.

Thank you Wedgie. Adelaide Hawk it would be 33 sanfl flags for the power and 3 for the magpies if your look at that way. Jack Cahill left in round 10 of 96 to start coaching the power and that is when the swap was meant to of happen. So that means that 96 was a 10 team comp??? with port adelaide football club playing round 1-10 and port adelaide magpies football clubs playing round 11-22 and then the finals and winning the grand final. So thats my point, last time I check port didnt go to zero points in after round 10 in 96. Port Adelaide Magpies have 36 flags and is the team you have all hated for years for what ever reasons you have and the Port Adelaide Power have been around since they were given a licence by the A.F.L. in late 1995 and have 1 flag.

=D> Absolutely Adelaide Hawk, im not sure why people cant understand it. The Port Adelaide Football Club went into the AFL in 1997 and a new club, Port Adelaide Magpies were formed. Winge and whine as much as you want but its a legal fact. Move on. The sanfl Magpies claiming 36 premierships is understandable considering it is in a lot of ways (except legally) the same club. I myself claim 36 premierships for the sanfl because it shits my mates.

The legalities of entities and dates on document don't categorically prove anything really. You can interpret them a few ways depending on how you want to argue the point.

Fact is, PAFC won the license for the AFL team but were required to keep a team in the SANFL. A unique situation that obviously required that a new entity be created, for one team or the other. The name that existed in the SANFL moved to the AFL (PAFC) and a new name (PAMFC) was created for the SANFL team. Administration, coaches, etc moved to the AFL while the PAMFC had to start from scratch. Which entity was which is probably as irrelevant as which name is which.

That's why, to me, it's a pointless debate as to which has the history and which doesn't. To me, both PAFC and PAMFC share the history (history is more than an entity, a club is arguably more than that - I think the some of the Melbourne based teams created new entities in the last 30 years, Brisbane Lions FC use the history of Fitzroy) and I don't lose any sleep over-analysing it.

The ANZ Bank operate today out of a different entity to that which started 100 years ago, or whenever. But their history is the full 100 years.

No! Bucky took the Magpie premierships to the AFL with Jack because M Rucci said so! Therefore Port Magpies have won 2 SANFL Premierships. End of story.

One thing is for sure the ethos and tradition doesn't seem to have sucessfully transferred to the AFL. One of 16 souless corporate entities now, very sad.

I'm with you, if you believe what comes out of Port - This is the case. But how many Magpies fans will stand for that and be ready to acknowledge it - none. And why should they?

Here we go again.

My opinion is that the club in the AFL - the Port Adelaide Football Club - is the original club. The club in the SANFL, is the new club. Thats my opinion. Thats how I view the situation. The members vote after the 2nd license was awarded, also approves this line of thinking. People can bring up all the ASIC regos they want, it doesnt change the situation for me.
