Hip Hop and Rap, is it crap?

Postby mick » Wed Dec 07, 2005 8:55 am

The 50 cent topic prompted me to ask this question. I dislike intensely Hip Hop and Rap music, to me it has no redeeming features (in my opinion). Am I right in this or just an old fart :? ? As most people on the forum are younger than me, I would be interested in your opinions.

sorry Mick.

far from end of argument Booney, i think its an age think
im sure in 30 years, i will be listening to the music i am today, and think that what the young people are listening to is just plain crap.
how many people remeber listening to music when they were young and their parents thought it was crap?
just becouse Rap and Hip Hop is very diffrent to the music of past eras does not mean it is crap, its getting bigger and bigger each year, and would possibly be close to the biggest form of music in the world at the moment.

First up, hip-hop is rap, rap is hip-hop. There is no hip-hop and rap. They are one and the same. Unless you're talking about the wider hip-hop culture which also includes graf, breaking and DJing as one of the 'Four Elements' (though you could make a case for long-ignored beatboxing too.)

The notion that rap is 'new' is a myth. It's simply the continuation of African-American oral traditions and can be traced back through the spoken poetry of the Last Poets, Cab Calloway, black radio DJs in the 50s, jive, skat, 'playing the dozens', toasting all the way back to 'The Signifying Monkey,' a toast about the trickster figure that is centuries old.

The music and rhythm in rap is found in the MCs vocal delivery or 'flow.' Clowns like 50 Cent and Eminem, even the seriously overrated Tupac have nothing on true masters like KRS, Rakim, Slick Rick and Jeru.

But I will agree with you on this mick - a lot of the rap you hear in the charts is derivative rubbish. Much like everything else in the top-40.

Interesting answer, I lived in West Berlin from '81-'83, I occassionally listened to AFN (American Forces Network) and there was a bit of rap music played even then, at the time I thought it was sort of novelty music. One of the DJs on AFN (a seargent in full uniform and white) did a Xmas rap one year. So it certainly isn't new.

No worries, Sam, you can call me an old fart any-time  I doubt that you will be listening to the same music in 30 years time, I'm certainly not listening to the Stones,Beatles or Led Zep much these days. I now prefer classical music ,JS Bach in particular, I also like Jazz and Blues a lot of it pre WWII. When I do listen to music that was around when I was young it's more of a Nostalgia thing.

Technically, the first ever 'rap song' debuted on the Billboard charts in 1979 - Sugarhill Gang's 'Rapper's Delight,' which you've probably heard a million times.

The early 80s saw hip-hop explode into mainstream consciousness. There was a massive breakdancing and graffitti craze across the world which died over here around late '84. So it was natural to assume that it was a fad.

But in the US, it was going from strength-to-strength. Hell, Run-DMC were so big at one point that adidas released a Run-DMC sneaker. At the time, they were the only non-athletes to be ever given a sneaker endorsement.

But anyway, in the late 80s, hip-hop re-emerged around the world, mainly through controversy: 2 Live Crew's censorship trial; Public Enemy's politics; the FBI keeping tabs on NWA. (As an interesting aside, JJJ almost had their radio license revoked for playing 'F@#$ the Police' on air); and all the idiots who used the "song lyrics made me do it" in their murder defences.

And now what do we have? Fiddy. Puffy. Joel Turner.

I agree with you Magpiespower most of the music in the Top 40 is manufactured crap. As for rap and hip hop I also have an intense dislike for most of it.

Firstly, they look ridiculous in their baggy jeans, over the top bling bling, gold teeth and what is with the stupid bandaid on Nelly’s face??

Secondly, what they sing about is usually crap and nothing more than how many people they shot and how many bitches they scored. They just seem like very insecure people that think that bragging about girls and popping a cap in someone’s ass somehow makes them someone big.

This is of course only my opinion and I’m pretty sure if I listed the artists that I like, there would be people that would ask how I could listen to some of them. That is the great thing about music it’s up to you what you choose to listen to.

Yes, you are an old fart  And yes, you are right about Rap. It is crap because we say it is..crap to us. It is good because Samuel L Jackson says it is..to him. Totally subjective. However, I would be very surprised if Samuel L Jackson is still as into it in 30 years time, no matter what your taste is, it usually evolves over time.

When I were a lad (LOL) I listened to hard to heavy rock/metal almost exclusively. Now I listen to a wider range of sounds as I have matured and Sam will do the same. He won't ever diss the beat but he will eventually start listening to music he couldn't have imagined listening to when 'he were a lad'.

Even though I reckon Rap/Hip hop is crap I do enjoy Speakerboxxx/Love Below, even though that would be considered a mainstream sellout to hardcore rap fans.

Fair call, but when you were all young i bet you were into what was on the radio and your parents thought it was a load of crap, even if you are not into it now, i think is just one of those inevitable things.

In answer to the the question Mick, I'm 29 and I do like some of it but like all music there is some that I think is very ordinary.
For one example, I loved the song "Crossroads" by Bone, Thugs and Harmony from 1996 and went out and bought the album, which I didn't like.
Like(d) Tupac Shakur, Ice Cube, Warren G and liked the little known album by 213 (Snoop Dogg, Warren G and Nate Dogg) that was released last year. As far as "Black" music goes though, I am more of a fan of R&B.
Mick, you say you like Jazz, do you like music by the late Donny Hathaway and George Benson?

R&B/Rap/Hip Hop is very much the younger generations theme. I grew up in a Metal/Punk era, and remember getting sledged by my Dad, who said "Guns 'n' Roses & Metallica? Who'll remember them in 10 years?" (said in 1988...), how wrong he was! Honestly, he didn't understand my music, like I no longer understand the "in" music. I have Snoop's "Drop It Like It's Hot" single, and Eazy E's "Eazy Duz It" album, but they are exceptions, not the rule. I guess music gives you a sense of identity, at an age where your looking for one, which is why each generation has their own style of music. R&B/Rap/Hip Hop isn't crap, but I don't understand it, or belong in that world.

PS As with most, I've mellowed with age, I prefer to get audible excitment from the likes of Mr Bungle, the Butthole Surfers, and sort through my back catalogue of Punk, Metal & any tune that takes my fancy from 10CC's Dreadlock Holiday & Manfred Mann's Earth Band's "Blinded By The Light" through to Armand Van Helden's "Into Your Eyes" & Planet Funk's "Chase The Sun"...

PSS Best songs ever
1. Baggy Trousers- Madness
2. Chase The Sun- Planet Funk

Whilst I'm still unsure of exactly what falls under the Hip Hop category, I'd probably be the same as most, on the whole it's not my kinda thing but I could find plenty of songs I quite like ... Just to embaress myself, I like a bit of the BEP's stuff, that Planet Funk song Punky mentioned ... Does Fragma fall into thsi category??
