It would seem obvious to some, yet not so to others hey MC :?

Last time I checked a keyboard wasn't made of ivory. How many elephants do you have to shoot to custom make your keyboards?

So since then Balak, Mallala and United are the only clubs to have survived?? Its a shame some of the other clubs couldnt tough it out for a while and build some history of thier own.

They say a week's a long time in footy, but it's an eternity in this forum! Could only be a couple of days since I last had a look here, but 3 or 4 pages later...

I know how keen a fisherman you are Swampy so I can only assume that's what you're doing here! It's a fact of life in country sport that teams will merge with others to keep a presence in the area for the sport. A lot has been said about sponsors and the role they play in keeping clubs going, but player numbers are the main thing that causes clubs to fold/merge. Especially if you don't have sponsors capable of paying whole sides. ;)

But, as they say, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and I think that certainly applies in our case. Even in our current incarnation, we have had times when we weren't sure if we were going to survive. But I'm glad we did, as someone has to keep the bastards honest! And while I'm at it, I'm pretty sure all of Balak, Mallala and Longies would give anything to have the history that we've created in the last 8 years! Ask someone in 20 years time who won the 2007 APFL flag, and unless they played for Mallala they will probably answer "Hummocks", thinking there's every chance they'll be right. Now that's history.

And when you merge with another club, you don't lose the history of your previous incarnation, rather you gain the history of the club you merged with! History from Hummocks United such as the premiership in 1964 v Mallala, which apparently was especially sweet as the holier than thou Magpies (along with Balak) had voted against the inclusion of Hummocks into the APFL on the grounds that they wouldn't be competitive! 1964 was their first year in the comp. They won it the first 3 years they were in. Then Watchman the 2 years after that! It wasn't until 1970 that Mallala won it again! And history from the Port Wakefield side like stories from their premierships in 84 (which we'll hear plenty more of at their 25th anniversary reunion this year!) and 92, and the characters that played in them, etc. I won't bore you with too many more details, but suffice to say change is a part of country sport, and those that embrace it thrive.

Bite given :D

Your right I do like fishing Jack and I havent caught one that big for a while!!
Im about to throw the line again Jack this time going deep!!! Deep sea fishing is exciting as your never sure what you gonna get!!!

Point taken Rucci. I have never questioned the success of HWE over the past 8 years and I have always said it has been an unreal effort and I always will. The longevity of success is awesome and is something we're all very jealous of.
But there is a general trend as to why and how this topic keeps popping its head up. Success is one thing, modesty is another. Yes if in fact I was part of an 8 year old club then I would be more than happy with my clubs efforts of multiple premierships, but given Im not, rather a player at a 100 year old club (this year) where premierships seem such a huge achievement given we have won just 3 in the past 15 years the last being in 2007, yes the entire club and town enjoy the thrill of winning one, but everyone is generally (always odd exceptions) pretty modest about it knowing that they have to front up in a few months time to defend it again and can look pretty silly if you cant.

I guess the point Im making is that you blokes always seem to bring up your recent success over the past eight (im sure its more like 11) years. From my point of view if HWE had not have had that type of success then it would have been a surpirse to most given the merger, I mean merger = premierships and we have seen it happen time and time again e.g. Brisbane-Fitzroy & Woodville/West Torrens etc etc. However I do agree that its not that simple and you definately have earnt the ones you won with some quality people around ala Jared Wilson, the Reid, the manners clan, Wilsons etc etc and there are many many more at HWE.

I agree that the comp is better off for it and all your clubs that have merged to form HWE would not have survived one thier own so it was really the only option, but my view is that while your intial success has been awesome, I tend to prefer the modesty and realism that comes with success, as opposed to the alternative!

Funny about that   . Something tells me that you wanted to get caught out though.

Interesting reading back on all of Max's posts, pretty harsh at times over 6 months or so. Did you think arguing with yourself a couple of times Donkey would cover it up

Holy Sh*t!!!!

What's happening?? I've just woken up with a massive hangover and can't make any sense out of what i'm reading on here.
Multiple user names, green utes, computers made of ivory, Mundoora/Wookona, what the f*ck!! Me & Johnny are going back to bed!!

PS - Apparently Brinkworth won the cricket premiership this year also but they were'nt too happy with some visiting Longies cricketers on Monday & ran them out of town. Luckily Johnny was driving & all made it out unscathed & with licences intact.
One day original John Palmer will be found & the truth will be known.

Ok lads, With the footy starting tomorrow its the time of year where we can all not only spend time on here but its AFL Dream Team season.

Donkey, Maxy and myself ;) think it would be a good idea to start an APFL Dream Team Comp. Only problem is that sides need to be completed prior to tomorrow nights game so we need to be quick. Let me know if there is enough interest in it and I will start a league up and PM everyone the details.
