Now granted, due to age and the loss of the bands most key member, I wasn't expecting them in all their prime glory, but out of around the dozen songs they covered, I think only 6 were their own ("Speak No Evil" a notible admission)
I honestly don't think I'll ever top the disappointment factor of this gig ... Fair enough a far portion of blame is mine for my own expectations, but fair dinkum ... At one stage half the crowd were yelling "Bring on Dragon!!" and they were already 4 songs into their show!!
Don’t dwell on it CP. Try and remember Dragon at the Festival Theatre 1977 at the height of their fame & the top of their game.
For the benefit of those who didn’t make it to this one, let me tell you how bloody good it was. I took the future missus (Fort Battle-Axe).
Having been to many ‘cultural’ events at the FT, it was an absolute blast to see everyone up and dancing. The stuffed shirts who ran the joint must have thought they were going to have a rock riot of Woodstock proportions, but there was never gonna be a problem.
Dragon had the whole crowd spellbound with original material that was perfectly rehearsed, performed and received at full volume.
This joyous celebration of a great band at their absolute best spilled out of the seats, into the aisles and even onto the stage. Security soon realised that Marc Hunter had a mic in one hand & the audience in the other. Dragon was in total control !
No-one interfered with the band while dancing up on stage with them.
Why would ‘ya? We just wanted the music to go on playin’ forever !
Eventually security was forced to encourage people back down, but only through fear that if anymore got up there it might prove too heavy for the stage !
Great band. Brilliant music. Perfect production & acoustics. Fantastic audience.
Without doubt the most enjoyable concert I’ve ever been to.
And best of all, due to my employer at the time, I had free tickets !

Everytime I see cracks in the cement in & around Festival Theatre, I grin and say to myself……. “Dragon did that !”
