The dialogue before that went something like this (for those that didn't hear it)

"Just when you think they are down and out...boy, oh boy, these Aussies"
"You sound just like Mr.Greig. Your good mate, I think you're missing him"

That's a funny looking field with two fielders at short mid-wicket.

Edit: I'm thinking a right hander, short cover for Hughes.

sucked into those biast south african commentators! cant wait to see hughesy help us win the ashes

I'm not solely having a shot at you but I just dont get it, why do some on here think these South African commentators are OTT biased? I think given the circumstances (beating us at home) they've been very diplomatic. I haven't heard too many rude statements from them at all and then you compare that to the rubbish from Tubby, Heals or Slats and I find it mind numbing.

If you think these guys are too pro-South African you should've heard Pat Symcox and a straight guy who's name escapes me now not last time there but the previous time (2003 maybe?). They were worse than the Channel 9 slop.

Good to see another good Australian tradition is alive and well building a new wonder kid up and putting him on a pedestal.

Yes Hughes has been fantastic but like he was closer to his next test century at the Wanderer's following his 4th baller he is closer to his next test duck following his two centuries here. He still has a lot to learn about the mental side of test cricket as opposition sides will work him out and as questions of his temperament and technique.

as I've said before this kid is destined for a long and successful test career but not before he gets dropped and is made to tighten his technique and refine his mental approach to the game.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Disgraceful running and calling between the wickets.
Poor strike rate.

Could we complete the transformation of the team for the Ashes ... Ferguson for Mr Cricket? 34 YO for a 24 YO?

Hussey takes 3 1/2 hours to score 50 in the first innings, now scratches around for 19 when everyone else is caning them.

Does he only have one more test to prove his still got it?

PS: Well done Phil Hughes. NFC isn't always right, but he was here.

2-3 years ago Mike Hussey could do no wrong (averaging above 50) & was everybodies favourite, now Hughes has that mantle (& pressure). The only real difference is about 10 years (between them), & Hughes will have time to counter the bowlers once he responds to them "working him out".
Let's enjoy what he provides, but don't be surprised/disappointed when he does have a lean trot.

Of course he will get dropped at some stage. All the greats have had it happen...warne, waugh, ponting and even bradman. Its how he bounces back that will determine if he becomes one of the greats

What a wonderful knock by Hughes, the shot to bring up his ton was majestic. Our new guys have all done well this Series which has made a big difference.

We might as well declare and give ourselves plenty of time to bowl them out and win the series, the only thing that can stop us is the weather.

I was wondering the same thing the other day and the other two recent names I came up with were Allan Border and Mark Taylor. Tubby would have to have been dropped some time from 1992-1994 before he became captain, but I can't recall now ? AB was pretty constant too IIRC?

Adam Gilchrist I'd have thought would be classed as a batsman, he played all of his Tests consecutively.

Taylor missed two Tests in his career, the 5th Test vs Windies in 1992/93 and the 1st Test vs South Africa in South Africa in 1993/94.

The only Test Border did not play in during his career was the 6th Test vs England in 1978/79. All of the last 153 Tests of his career were consecutive.

Also, although it is a technicality on Greg Chappell, but he was dropped after he signed with WSC.

Border was made 12th man after his third Test, having scored 45* and 60* in his second Test in a side getting flogged 5-1 by the Poms. Ridiculous decision, and never dropped again.
Taylor was dropped during the 92-93 West Indies series for the last test in Perth, but came back for the NZ tour and the Ashes and was captain within a year.

Snap. The second of those Tests Taylor missed was due to illness, and Hayden came in and made his debut. Only dropped for one Test, like Border.

Got a feeling Hughes may well avoid being dropped. He is just so level headed and mature for his age. He also has an incredibly special talent. Whilst there is every chance that he may at some point be dropped i would not be surprised one little bit if he never does. He is possibly the most likely candidate we have seen for a very long time. Very few players know there game as well as Hughes does at 30 let alone at 20. Absolute freak who simply refuses to play shots when the ball isn't in one of his zones but when it is he just never misses out.
