I'd recommend either Commonwealth Bank or any credit union, as neither of these institutions are charging you the disloyalty fee.

I'd also recommend getting a Visa Debit Card, and putting most of, if not all, your over the counter purchases on "credit" as you dont get charged for the transaction.

Hope this helps :)

Credit Unions fees are jumping up in the next few months. Don't remember why (something to do with them being fair to customers, unlike banks), but I know a chick who works at a credit union and she said their fees are going to skyrocket.

ours have raised slightly, but nothing major and are still competitive in the market place. i would hardly call it sky-rocketing. but each credit union to their own i guess!

mighty tiger - eftpos transactions still incurr a fee from your FI, however it isnt usually as much. You generally get X amount of free over-the-counter transactions a month, and then charged for the ones you make after you've used up your free ones. Around the $1 mark generally.

I've been with a credit union and commonwealth and their fees are terrible.. especially the credit union.

I was paying out $20 month sometimes... Just because the banks want you to use their stupid atm's.

I think Westpac might be the go..

Browny, I'll give you the name of a Westpac customer that will set you straight about them.
He's p*ssed them off because of all the issues he's had so it wouldn't be a good reference.

Most recently I was slugged $45 for the month, plus about $5 from my own bank??

Mind you, that's a dream compared to Thailand, you pay anywhere between $5 and $15 to use an ATM over there. Lol

I use an annual fee free credit card [group plan deal] for all major purchases and pay it in full at the end of the month.
Once in a while I draw some cash from my own bank's ATM, planning ahead how much I'll need.
I keep a sufficient balance in the cheque account to avoid bank fees there.
Everything else I do on line.
No bank fees, no interest charges...

I only use an ATM once a week of my own bank (Commonwealth), and take out what I need for the week, so it doesn't really effect me much.

But if I'm understanding correctly, instead of just your bank charging you for being 'disloyal', the bank of the ATM you use also charges you for using their facility. Is this right? So it's pretty much doubling the cost of using other ATMs?

Nup, still the same, had a lengthy talk with my branch manager about 2 weeks ago, that was one of the things discused.

Why would you use a Bendigo Bank ATM when you can use either BankSA, Westpac or St George ATMs for nothing?

BTW, with BankSA my account has no fees as my St George mortgage is direct debitted every fortnight from that account, my other 1/2's account has a $6 monthly fee for unlimited EFTPOS and withdrawls from BankSA/StGeorge/Westpac

Under the old system the bank whose ATM you used charged your bank and your bank passed this charge on to you, and also charged you their own processing fee. Under the new system you are charged directly by the bank that owns the ATM, and then by your bank. In theory it should cost the same as only the way of charging it has changed to simplify the processing for the banks. However, I bet the fees go up at the same time.
