ATM Fees

Postby HH3 » Wed Mar 04, 2009 10:19 am

I went to the ATM this morning and when I went to check my balance a message came up on the screen saying "this transaction will cost $2, do you want to continue?" I said yes and it brought my balance up. Then when i went to take some of that money out the same message came up again. So to take out some money it cost me $4. Just because I didnt use my banks ATM. Im with BankSA and I used a Bendigo Bank ATM. I dont know if the fees are different for different banks but thats just rediculous!!

It's always been like that HH3.

Difference being that from today they have to notify you at the ATM what you are being charged.

Im pretty sure the fees have gone up tho. Its been all over the news. Last night they said the same thing happened in the UK around 1999 and there was such an uproar that the banks had to can the extra fees.

My understanding is that only one of the banks charged you a fee (eg your bank) but now both banks (your bank and the bank whos ATM your using) will both charge you.

I may be wrong tho.

I'm with ANZ.
But I know that if I used another banks atm for a balance, and then withdraw it would cost me 2 x $2 and always has (Except it used to be $1-50 till a couple of months ago).

With the new rule, I'm not sure how it works, but you could be quite right that they both will charge.
Let us know when you get your bank statement :D

Yesterday I told my husband "No more using other bank machines - Find an ANZ or use eftpos" O:)

I dont think i got charged that much before. On previous statements I dont think i was charged more than $10 in fees. But that could be because I have a Visa Debit Card from BankSA and theres no EFTPOS fees.

sadly, this has always happened HH. Most financial institutions will charge you twice for this. Once for the balance enquiry, and one for the withdrawal, as the system reads this as two seperate transactions (made more obvious when they require you to put your PIN in again)

this direct charging is really no different to what was happening before, its just made customers more aware of the cost involved. FI's have always been able to charge as much as they want for their customers disloyalty. and they still can. However where i work ( a credit union), as well as CBA, arent charging their customers a disloyalty fee on top of the direct charging fee.

For example. If you are a Westpac customer, and you use a ANZ ATM, ANZ will charge you (say) $2 for them to process your transaction, and then with your end of month fees, Westpac will charge you (say) $1.75, so your in fact getting charged $3.75.

it's all pretty confusing, but once you get your first statement after this month, it will outline it a bit better i think.

most FI's are trying to make things easier for their customers, and up-ing the number of their ATM's that are around the place. Redi-ATM's (used by credit unions) have announced 1000 or so more ATM's australia wide.

as for bank SA, dont you have that thing where you can send an sms and it replies telling you where the nearest ATM is? that's handy!

as for where i am, we're a pretty small community, so all the FI's that are here, only have the one ATM, so if that's down for whatever reason, you dont have a choice but to use one at another bank.

Kind of lame.

Yeah that would suck. Usually i only use them if im at the shopping center and theres usually heaps in one spot so its not too bad. Eftpos is free for me so ill just use that as much as possible and check my balance online.

It's still bullshit how they charge you to access you're own money. Always has been.
Considering we're doing them a favour for using them. Banks are criminals

In addition to making the fees more visible, the other change is that the previous cap on these fees has been removed so the FI's can charge what they want to, subject to market forces.

So if there's a line up of 5 ATMs expect them to all charge the same

However the lone ATM at the pub/club will charge through the nose because they know people will still use it - especially late at night ;)

I have been charged $2 per non-my bank ATM transaction for a long time and so always tried to draw out cash of my bank ATM's only

The other tip is using the "cash out" facility at supermarkets, etc when you buy other stuff. No fees for that.

Not for the customer, but I believe the business pays a fee for eftpos transactions.

yes they do but places like supermarkets love you to take cash out (hence why they always ask) as its a very cheap way for them to get rid of their surplus cash
