AN official says eight members of Sri Lanka's national cricket team have been wounded after gunmen opened fire on their vehicle in eastern Pakistan.

Pakistan Cricket Board security official Nadeem Iqbal says the team members were hurt Tuesday near the stadium where they were due to arrive to play.

Sri Lankan team manager Brendon Kruppu confirmed the incident and said the team's batsman, Kumar Sangakkara, was among the injured.

Security concerns have plagued Pakistan for years and some foreign sports teams have refused to play here.

At least three players in the Sri Lanka cricket team were hurt in a gun attack while being driven to the Lahore cricket stadium in Pakistan on Tuesday.

Sri Lanka Sports Minister Gamini Lokuge said Tharanga Paranavitana and Thilan Samaraweera were taken to hospital after the shooting.

Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardena was slightly wounded in the foot, his father told a local television station after speaking with him by telephone.

The team bus came under fire as the players headed to the Gaddafi stadium for the third day of the second Test against Pakistan.

Australia are justified in their decision to refusal to travel there in the past 10 years.

Pakistan should play their home series in the Middle East or England.

Is this the end of International cricket in Pakistan? In a word Yes. Who in their right mind would go there after this. Australia, India and all the other countries who expressed concerns or refused to tour are now completely justified.

I hope all players, officials and innocent bystanders make full recoveries from this attack.

And the PCB offered the Sri Lankan's $$$$ to tour as both boards need the coin from TV rights.

Makes Imran Kahn's claim on Enough Rope last year that terrorist would never touch cricketers is a bit dubious...

It is a sad day for Pakastani cricket. Lets hope the Sri Lankan players all end up ok. I also feel for the young Pakastani cricketers that will never have the delight of playing for their country in their country as it is no chance to happen any more.

Samaraweera seriously injured. Vaas was injured and stretchered out as well.

None of the injuries are life threatening.

4 gunmen have been killed, as well as 5 police.

At least five members of the Sri Lankan cricket team have been injured in a shooting incident in the Pakistani city of Lahore, a Sri Lankan minister says.
Sports Minister Gamini Lokuge told the BBC said that early reports said indicated that the injuries to five players and a coach were minor.
The incident happened when unidentified gunmen fired on a convoy carrying Sri Lankan and Pakistani cricketers.
Unconfirmed reports say some policemen had been killed by the shooting.
Sri Lankan media reports said two of the players including Thilan Samaraweera, who scored a double century in the ongoing Test match, have been taken to hospital.
The convoy was carrying Pakistani and Sri Lankan cricketers to the Gaddafi stadium, which is hosting a Test match between the two sides. The third day of play in the Second Test was scheduled to begin.

"It appears that our team bus was targeted on the way to the match. It appears that four of our cricketers have been injured and taken to the hospital," a Sri Lankan cricket official told an Indian TV channel from Colombo.
TV pictures showed two gunmen with backpacks on the road where the incident happened.
An eyewitness told Reuters news agency that three policemen and a traffic warden had been killed in the incident.
Shop owner Ahmed Ali said two policemen had been driving behind the team bus when the attack happened.
"It was a very heavy firing and I heard at least two explosions at the time," an eyewitness told Reuters.
Pakistani invited Sri Lanka to tour after India's cricket team pulled out of a scheduled cricket tour following the deadly November attacks in the western Indian city of Mumbai.

Not sure what you mean by that Pidge? It isn't the fault of the Pakistani players themselves and i believe international cricket still has a place for Pakistan. I for one don't want to see the cricketers punished for what some people have done in their country. They will just have to play their 'home' fixtures at a neutral venue. Kenya are nowhere near international standard IMO.

Bye Bye to cricket in Pakistan is likely but not bye bye to Pakistan IMO.
