Virus/Malware Issue

Postby Lunchcutter » Sun Mar 01, 2009 11:57 pm

howdy,
me and my dh have a problem with both our pc's in the house getting a nasty trojan worm virus - we do have current, up to date PC cillan that usually works a treat but this nasty seems to have got through and has slowed both our laptops (networked) to a snails pace only. I have posted a thread at www.techsupportforum.com however at this point i am still awaiting a reply.. if this trouble-shooting does not prove successful can anybody recommend where we could go to get them looked at and cleaned? this has only happenend twice in twelve years of being on the internet and once I managed to get the fix from techsupportforum and once dh wiped the drive... can anyone offer any advice prior to sending in for repair :(

Something that worked for me once years ago was to download another antivirus product, uninstall my old one, and install, update, and run the new one.
None of them are perfect, and it doesn't really pay to rely on one, but, unfortunately, there are not any the are inactive until clicked on, and installing two means they interfere with each other.
Also, remember to turn off System Restore as often a virus will sit in there and reinstall itself on reboot.

I tend to like to use the less common antivirus and antimalware products as I figure the people who generate malware are more likely to concentrate on tricks to beat the popular ones, just as they do with browsers, which is why I don't use Internet Explorer.

Currently, at home I have the free Comodo Internet Security suite on one computer, and on the other I kept Zone Alarm firewall and just installed the antivirus component of Comodo. I've been fairly happy with it. As general malware/spyware protection I have a-squared, Malwarebytes, and Ad-Aware installed, but none of them permanently active. I run them in rotation.

I have Trend Pro.

Never had any trouble.

Updates every time I turn my computer on.

You only get what you pay for.

Search around, don't buy it on the net.

Officeworks on special $97.

Net Price some $200.

Covers everything

Peace of Mind

If you need repairs, Gsoft computers, Anderson Walk.

Lunchcutter - I have the following 3 programs running all the time and all 3 are freely available from the internet.
I can safely say I haven't had any bugs on my PC for well over a year.

Avast Anti-virus
Ad-Aware
spybot - search and destroy.

Is your firewall turned on also ?

Best I can suggest is Kasperksy Internet Suite. I use it all the time, and also sell it to anyone I know.
Costs around $40 a year (from me haha) and covers everything. Is light-weight so that it doesn't hog system resources.

You can download a 30 day trial from their site, http://kaspersky.com.au
