Yeah Shrek, heard you were blowin out a few candles !

Did anyone see the front page of the Sunday mail today. Big explosion in Gawler Southyesterday. At first I thought it might of been the footy club and the boys were doing a " Greek stocktake" on the place to get the insurance and start again :D But it wasnt to be !

While on the topic, where do we rate all the clubs as far as facilities and surface go in the BLG

I'll start it off from Best to worst !

1. Nuri - good surface, great clubrooms, family friendly, good place to play footy .

2. Freeling- best place to view both Netball and Footy from the clubrooms with glass all round . Good surface most of the time, now that the mysterious leak in the forward pocket clubside sprinklers has been sorted. Average changerooms though.

3. Angaston- good ground, nice setting, can get boggy, improved facilities after they had their own Greek stocktake a few years ago when the grandstand burnt down. Rebuilt it all. Did they name the grandstand after the colts player who set fire to the old one? .

4. Tanunda - good atmosphere, clubrooms, and surface. Nice grandstand

5. Kapunda- pretty solid all round

6. Willaston - best surface, but have to abseil to the clubrooms. Cant be good for business ( or insurance)

7. Barossa - Mudpack park, limited parking, cold as a mother and law's kiss. Nice setting on a nice day- I feel like I am in Middle Earth out of Lord of the Rings. Keep expecting hobbits to come down the mountain behind the club. If underwater footy ever takes off, This place and Bridgewater would be a perfect place to start. Its nickname is "Atlantis" cause its always underwater.

8. Centrals- the Dogtrack- where do you start - first time I went in there to play, and I was looking for the changerooms I was scared I was going to walk into a scene out of underbelly in one of the many sheds/ warehouses around the ground. If there was meant to be a dogtrack around a footy oval, God would of given greyhounds footy boots. All the atmosphere of a day of lawn bowls out at Coober Pedy on a 48 degree day. Reasonable surface, to finish on a good note.

9. South- cramped, poor parking, getting bogged on a wet day, changerooms so small you have to walk outside to change your mind, all add to the unique experience that is South. Surface is ok, But why is the goal post at The scoreboard end on a 45 degree angle, and if your kicking from the boundary your out on the road ; yet at the other end the pocket is so shallow from the boundary, that you can order a pie and coke from the canteen while your having a shot ! Coombsie would love this pocket

What do you guys rate as the best and worst ?

Spot on with most things you say drifter with out being to nasty. Its about time some clubs returned some profits to their clubs facilities and give a few creature comforts to supporters instead of wasting it all on player payments.

drifter we have had this debate bout grounds before, it always starts up round finals time, just look round that time last year. In all honesty the only grounds capable of hosting a GF would be angaston/tanunda IMO. reasons being facilities, parking, changerooms and general atmosphere created by their coliseum type venue.

Shrek, no money is awarded to second last, yet you claim to be at perlubie and didn't see you register for any event, would be interested to know want events you placed in??? Where you betting on the crabs??

Haven't been to Perlubie for a couple of years, came second in the swim the year I did go then had to go lie down for a bit. Apparently the bloke who won that and the run didn't even drink the night before, should have been disqualified. The second place this year was in the sprint. I'm amazed that at least two people recognised me up there, how come no-one said hello?

Pretty sure it said $50 in the program too, Charlie the bloke that won it last year reckons he was given half of what he was supposed to get too.

Obviously you don't have to move too quick to get a kick in the Barossa otherwise all of you greyhounds would have been in the race.

Back to the footy....

What are legit excuses for clubs not clearing players to other clubs in the league...
And by that I mean actual laws/rulings from the association...

Seems there are a couple this year, and I dont see why they have to drag out if there are clears regulations to follow!

I often find it hard to see why someone would want to change from one club to another within there own association, such as the Hills comp where players free lance from one club to another. I’m sure that each problem is made up from such issues as lack of opportunity, unhappy player, doesn’t like the coach, shagging another players girlfrield, etc.

Clubs only have to clear player intra association if they are done by mutual agreement.

You have got to be kidding, Lyndoch has a fairly reasonable slope to the east and the surface is no better than any other oval. The facilities are not up to scratch either. Barossa use it a few times through the year but like their other oval it is not very well liked.

Hello all. First of all, let me introduce myself. I am Stephen Norman.
A number of posters to this site have alerted me to some slanderous rubbish posted on the forum about myself and hence I have located and registered for it.
Upon reading this thread I was astonished to read a couple of posts claiming I "concoct" and have been "caught out" writing lies. I had those posts removed before the brewing legal hoo haa went above my head. BUT, let me make one thing very, very clear. At NO stage in the two and a half years I have been writing "A Sporting Chance" have I EVER written a lie. NEVER.
Nor has anyone ever called, emailed or spoken to me in that time, to say I have lied. There have been (very rare) errors of fact. Not one lie.
Information for my column comes from my many contacts in the football world - people like you, the posters to this forum. It was not made up and it did not come from this site.
There is not one club in this league which will not talk to me, and many contacts OFFER news and information.
I would be easy to ask Don Brook and 151 to put up or shut up, but I don't want to hijack this thread with BS which is way off topic.
Suffice to say, if either want to email me, or even come into Northern News and see me, they can have a crack at me in person. We can go over to the Old Bushman Hotel and have a beer and a yak, and I'm sure we'd end up shaking hands and that would be the end of it!
I am loathe to fill up what is a very good forum with tit for tat chat, so I anticipate this will be the last I will post on the matter.
All the best to you and your clubs in 2009!
As I reflected back on how I hesitated for a second before walking into the lion's cage carrying a leg of lamb, I thought to myself .......... I've got to do something about this lack of confidence.

Normo - I do enjoy reading your sports coverage during the season. I couldn't give a rats toss bag about the Gawler social scene, but buy your paper for the sports coverage only. It is quite obvious that the Bunyip has lifted the bar for local sports coverage by allocating more resources than any of the other papers. I am sure that your newspaper sales are reflective of this. Chin up son - Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Steve from what i have read, your column consists of lack of depth, you never seem to have any breaking news, Kapunda get a huge plug during football season.
I stopped reading it, but thought i would give it another chance last week and yet again another big headline story that was nothing new, everyone was aware of the person coming back to play footy for the club and he hasnt always played cricket for that club.
Go find some interesting gossip, that people will read and find interesting and gossip that you get, not gossip that Laidlow finds.

Not a popular column at all...

My opinions on the BL&G venues:
Nuriootpa; When you consider the whole package, Nuri is the best. Layout, playing surface, parking, changerooms, etc.
Willaston; Easily the best surface in the league. Clubrooms a bit far away, but they have the bar close by! Changerooms a bit small. Viewing and parking is good.
Tanunda; Good surface, parking a little tight, changerooms and clubrooms good.
Kapunda/Freeling/Angaston; Hard to split these three. All have good parking and good clubrooms. Kap and Ang have good changerooms, Freeling's a little pokey. Downsides are very little shelter at Kap and Freeling, Ang oval gets very muddy.
Gawler Central; Good playing surface and parking. Clubrooms not big, changerooms ok, but the atmosphere at the ground is average
Barossa District; Can't do a whole lot about the surface, but when it's dry, it's as good as most. Clubrooms are good, changerooms ok, but parking is a bugger. Layout is good.
South Gawler; Surface is one of the better ones, parking is mostly fine (when it's dry) and clubrooms are close by. Changerooms are a shocker though and viewing isn't as good when everything is at one end of the ground.
Lyndoch; Surface is sufficient, clubrooms average, changerooms poor. Parking around the oval is limited. It is central though!
