Totally agree,if every Australian receiving the stimuluspackage donated $50 it would be unreal for the victums. I say give every1 $900 and give the rest to these people at such a difficult time.

Its a problem that Authorities are reactive to rather than proactive. They tend to do something about it after the horse has bolted. The Australian Standard for the building of dwellings in risk areas has been under review since 2005 and still hasn't been updated. After the Eyre Peninsula Fires of 2005 the SA Government classified all council areas affected by it as bushfire risk areas. What about the neighbouring councils????? they are just as at risk as those that were burnt

Also what affects this event is going to have on the mental health of those involved. I believe that some people from the 2005 fires here are still receiving treatment and probably will for the rest of their lives

For those with Facebook...here's one way to show a little bit of support...I picked this one cos it has the most members and is in support of all involved...

Im not sure mate ... From the little I've read on the illness that plagues some/many arsonists, their chief fascination is with fire itself .. Im not sure many see past the allure of the flame to the devastation it causes?

It might be stating the bleeding obvious but one suggestion for everybody is to open accounts with photo album sites like Webshots and Flickr. Having watched people being interviewed at various times after floods and fires etc one of the main causes of distress is the loss of photo's...especially weddings/christenings and the like.

If you scan them into sites like these at least you can print copies later...even if your computer is destroyed...and you won't be tempted to waste precious time looking for photo albums at home. Do it for elderly relatives who don't have computers as well. It might not seem like much but photo's can be very precious and could mean a hell of a lot to people afterwards.

Got it in one, Spelly. This initiative is a very quiet yet big achiever.

If anyone wants to achieve something good out of this in SA, ask everyone you know who lives in a bushfire risk area if they have a household bushfire plan prepared and if not, "make" them do it with every bit of encouragement. Full details are at http://www.cfs.sa.gov.au.

I had my evacuation kit organised to go Friday night for Saturday, and it wasn't much fun deciding what to leave behind. Fortunately, I didn't have to go. SA had a lot of good luck and a lot of good fortune yesterday.

I do not wish to trivialize the enormity of this tragedy that will affect those left for years but is this the cost of not allowing within national parks & other environmental areas appropriate clearing & fire breaks.

Does this reflect the hard line environmental approach of Government, Councils and green groups - I personally feel that the situation is out of balance between human safety & the environment.

For fire breaks to have any impact in weather conditions like that experienced by Victoria the burns need to be alongside homes, not in national parks. The fires will not be stopped or slowed by breaks because the fires can spot up to several km ahead of the fire front. The breaks can reduce the intensity and radiant heat of the fire close to homes.

Years ago my family would invite the CFS to burn the northern end of our property every year to reduce the fuel load near the house. Not only does this reduce risk of losing the home, but provides training to CFS in actually putting out fires.

I remember the CFS used to burn off the land around Marino back in 80's but then stoopped due to complaints of smoke. Maybe this needs to be looked at starting up again controlled fires by CFS.
